Umbayee, the stage name of P. A. Ibrahim, is credited with two linked achievements. He made ghazals popular with audiences in Kerala through live performance and recordings, and he helped establish the idea that the ghazal could be written and sung in Malayalam rather than only in Urdu. The clearest marker of that second achievement is Pranamam, a album of Malayalam ghazals with lyrics by the poet Venu V. Desam, which Scroll describes as the first Malayalam ghazal album. The claim needs careful wording, because Malayalam film songs had ghazal-like and Hindustani-inflected qualities well before it, and Umbayee’s role is better described as a sustained popular tradition than as the sole origin of those influences.

Who Umbayee was

P. A. Ibrahim was born in 1950, according to The New Indian Express, which reported his death in 2018 at the age of 68 in its obituary of 1 August 2018. He was associated with the Fort Kochi and Mattanchery area of Kochi. The same paper’s follow-up of 2 August 2018 says he went to Mumbai as a trainee electrician and became a disciple of Ustad Mujawar Ali Khan, the path that eventually led him to singing.

His early work was in Urdu. Scroll describes him performing Urdu ghazals in Kochi in the late 1980s, and it is this stage that the feature treats as the starting point for his later focus on Malayalam.

From Urdu performance to Malayalam ghazals

The turning point, as Scroll tells it, came when a listener asked why there could not be ghazals in Malayalam. The question captures a real gap: Urdu ghazals were the established repertoire, while Malayalam listeners had few ghazals in their own language. Umbayee’s response was to seek Malayalam poets and lyrics, and that search brought him into contact with writers who would shape his albums.

In his own account, published in an interview republished by Manorama Online on 1 August 2018, Umbayee describes meeting Venu V. Desam and making the first Malayalam album. That account is consistent with Scroll’s reporting. He is also quoted in Scroll, in a translated English sense rather than a verified Malayalam transcript, as saying that the pangs of love and separation are not the preserve of North India alone.

Pranamam and the first Malayalam ghazal album

Pranamam is the milestone that matters most for the “pioneered” part of the title. Scroll identifies it as the first Malayalam ghazal album, with lyrics by Venu V. Desam. The sources reviewed do not give a release year for the album, so readers should not attach a date to it from this article alone.

The claim is precise in one specific sense: it is the first album dedicated to Malayalam ghazals. It is not a claim that Malayalam music had no ghazal influence before 1988 or before Pranamam. Those influences are documented in film music, which leads to the next point.

Earlier ghazal influence in Malayalam film songs

Scroll traces ghazal-like qualities in the 1960s film songs of M. S. Baburaj. The Government of Kerala’s Kerala Calling (May 2024) places Umbayee among the artists who developed Malayalam ghazals and describes how the form was adapted through the Malayalam language, ragas, and instruments such as the harmonium and tabla.

The useful way to hold these together is as a continuum rather than a single origin. Baburaj’s film songs brought Hindustani-inflected melody into popular Malayalam music. Umbayee’s work focused the form itself, through dedicated ghazal renditions, albums and live performance, and through Malayalam lyrics written for the purpose.

Albums, collaborators and dated milestones

The table below gathers the dated facts reported in the sources reviewed. Where a source gives only a year or a count, the table says so.

Year Event Source
1950 Birth of P. A. Ibrahim The New Indian Express, 1 August 2018
Late 1980s Performing Urdu ghazals in Kochi Scroll, 28 August 2018
1986 Singing for John Abraham’s Amma Ariyan, reported as raising his profile Scroll, 28 August 2018
1988 First album, as reported in the obituary The New Indian Express, 1 August 2018
Date not stated Pranamam, first Malayalam ghazal album, lyrics by Venu V. Desam Scroll, 28 August 2018; Manorama Online, 1 August 2018
2006 Paduka Saigal Padoo, with nine ONV poems composed and sung by Umbayee The New Indian Express, 2 August 2018
2016 Autobiography, reported by Scroll as Bhairava Ragam Scroll, 28 August 2018
2018 Death, age 68 The New Indian Express, 1 August 2018

The obituary also says he released more than ten ghazal albums. That is a reported summary, not a complete discography. No full catalogue of his releases was established in the sources reviewed, so the count should be read as the obituary’s figure.

His named collaborators include Venu V. Desam, ONV Kurup, Yusufali Kecheri and K. Satchidanandan. The strongest documented link is between Umbayee and ONV, through the nine poems on Paduka Saigal Padoo.

Form, adaptation and the azad ghazal debate

Malayalam ghazals raise a live question about form. Scroll quotes the poet K. Satchidanandan on an approach he describes as “what some call azad ghazal”: “I would describe it as what some call azad ghazal, one that didn’t adhere to the traditional rules of composition,” said Satchidanandan. He goes on to say that the approach uses Hindustani melodies to create moods and broadens the themes. This is one poet’s description of one approach, not a definition of the genre.

The playback singer Srinivas gives the opposing emphasis, as quoted in the same feature: “His intense yearning to own the ghazal, make it a part of our music – I think questions of form and structure of ghazal simply melted before that,” said Srinivas. Read together, the two statements show the debate. One critic-poet places the adaptation in a looser tradition; the singer credits Umbayee’s commitment to the form for making it part of Malayalam music.

Neither statement settles whether these works are ghazals in the strict sense. What the sources support is that Malayalam ghazals adapted the mood and melodic language of the form, and that the question of how far that adaptation departs from traditional composition remains open.

Where to read more

Scroll reports that Umbayee’s autobiography is titled Bhairava Ragam and was published in 2016. One New Indian Express obituary spells the title Ragam Bhairavi, so check the title against a current catalogue before citing it. Current availability and editions of the book and of the albums mentioned here could not be confirmed from the sources reviewed.
