Tyka Nelson inherited an equal interest in Prince’s estate alongside his five other siblings, but the available reporting does not establish her personal net worth. The often-cited figure of about $156 million was the value of Prince’s estate in 2022—not a calculation of Nelson’s wealth. Nelson died at 64 in November 2024.
Did Tyka Nelson inherit Prince’s estate?
Yes. Prince died in 2016 without a will, and his six siblings inherited equal interests in his estate. The Associated Press reported that Nelson was Prince’s only full sibling. The Delaware Court of Chancery later described the equal interests and the sale of a combined 50% stake by Nelson and her brothers Omarr Baker and Alfred Jackson to Primary Wave.

In a June 2024 interview, Nelson said she had sold all but 2% of her shares. She described the remaining position as “a little teeny corner,” while adding that it still had “a big role.” Her comment concerns the shares she retained; it does not disclose their value. An inherited interest, a later sale of shares, and an estate valuation are different things. The sources do not establish the value or liquidity of Nelson’s retained interest when she died, her other assets or liabilities, or what happened to that interest afterward. It would therefore be misleading to calculate her personal fortune from Prince’s estate valuation or from the reported ownership percentages. Who was Tyka Nelson?
Nelson was a singer-songwriter who released four albums: Royal Blue (1988), Yellow Moon, Red Sky (1992), A Brand New Me (2008), and Hustler (2011). Before a planned farewell performance in 2024, she told the Minnesota Star Tribune, “I really wasn’t a singer. I’m a writer. I just happen to be able to sing. I enjoy singing.”

Her debut album produced two songs that appeared on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, according to the Associated Press: “Marc Anthony’s Tune” spent 11 weeks on the chart and peaked at No. 33, while “L.O.V.E.” spent seven weeks and peaked at No. 52. The AP’s November 5, 2024, report said Nelson died at age 64 at North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale, Minnesota; her son President Nelson confirmed her death.
