Two-Pass Encoding Explained: When to Use It for Streaming

Two-pass encoding can help with a complete prerecorded program, but live streaming must keep pace with incoming frames. Learn what OBS’s NVENC multipass setting means and how to choose and test a workflow.

Two-pass encoding is usually most useful when you have a complete, prerecorded program and can analyze it before producing the final file. For a live stream, the encoder must keep up with incoming video; a whole-program analysis pass is generally incompatible with that real-time constraint. OBS’s NVENC option called “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution)” is a distinct, encoder-specific mode—not a live broadcast encoded once, rewound, and encoded again.

What is two-pass encoding?

In full two-pass rate control, an encoder analyzes the source in a first pass, then uses information from that analysis to guide bitrate allocation during a second pass. This can be useful when the complete source is available in advance and the output has a target bitrate or size. The exact behavior depends on the encoder and its options; FFmpeg, for example, documents first- and second-pass flags for its own rate-control workflows (FFmpeg documentation).

The key distinction is that “two-pass” does not name one universal technique. A full-program two-pass encode and a hardware encoder’s multipass mode may share a label while operating differently. Check the documentation for the encoder you are actually using rather than assuming that settings transfer between implementations.

Why live streaming changes the trade-off

A live encoder processes frames as they arrive. It must sustain at least real-time throughput at the chosen resolution, frame rate, preset and content complexity; analysis, buffering or an overly demanding configuration can make the stream fall behind.

Google’s live VP9 guidance identifies 1x as the real-time threshold: below that speed, encoding cannot keep pace with live input, leading to buffering and transmission breaks. That is an operational threshold, not a promise that every system will maintain 1x at every setting (Google for Developers: Live encoding with VP9).

Latency also matters. GStreamer’s x264 documentation notes that some settings introduce frame buffering and pipeline latency. Its tune=zerolatency option can work around buffering latency, but may affect overall encoding quality (GStreamer x264 documentation). Whether a particular mode is suitable depends on measured performance and the stream’s latency requirements; the cited guidance establishes no universal latency penalty or quality improvement for two-pass streaming.

What “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution)” means in OBS

OBS exposes “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution)” as an NVENC option. NVIDIA also includes this mode in its OBS NVENC streaming recommendations (OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide; NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide). This is a specific hardware-encoder multipass setting. Do not interpret its name as the complete live program being encoded once, rewound and encoded again. The available documentation identifies the setting and its context but does not establish that its algorithm is identical to full-program two-pass rate control.

Recommendations are not universal requirements. Encoder support and controls differ across NVENC, x264, AMD and Quick Sync, and the options can vary with OBS and encoder versions. OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options page is explicitly for OBS 31.0 and was dated 2024-08-21; check the current interface and documentation before mapping a setting name across versions (OBS Advanced NVENC Options (31.0)).

Choose the workflow that matches the job

Use case Practical approach What to verify
Prerecorded program with a target bitrate or file size Consider full two-pass encoding if the complete source is available before the final encode. Confirm what the chosen encoder’s pass options do, then inspect output quality and bitrate behavior.
Live stream where continuity and latency matter Prioritize a configuration that sustains real-time processing and avoids excessive buffering. Test throughput, dropped frames, system load and end-to-end latency on the actual setup.
OBS live stream using NVENC Treat “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution)” as the NVENC mode documented for OBS, not as whole-program two-pass encoding. Check current OBS and encoder settings, GPU load, destination requirements and stream results.

Do not copy recording settings as guaranteed live-stream settings. OBS’s 2023-11-30 recording guide lists NVENC baseline recording choices including Constant QP, a 2-second keyframe interval, P5 preset, High Quality tuning and “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution)”; for x264 it lists CRF and the veryfast CPU preset. Those are recording baselines, not universal live-stream prescriptions. NVIDIA’s guide recommends a 2-second keyframe interval for its NVENC streaming configuration and notes that GPU utilization can be a reason to turn Look-ahead off. Treat both sources as context-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every GPU, OBS version or platform.

Compare rate control, throughput and delivery separately

Rate-control goal

Decide whether the job prioritizes a target or average bitrate, a target file size, or quality-based encoding. FFmpeg notes that bitrate tolerance governs how far rate control may deviate from a target average bitrate; making the tolerance too tight can harm quality. The meaning and availability of equivalent controls vary by encoder, so use that encoder’s documentation.

Real-time performance

Test the intended resolution, frame rate, preset and representative content together. A setting that works on a simple scene may not keep pace with complex or rapidly changing footage. Check whether encoding remains at or above real time, and observe dropped frames and CPU or GPU load during an actual stream.

Latency and buffering

Account for buffering throughout the pipeline, not just the encoder. A low-latency setting may trade away some quality, and the right balance depends on the use case. Measure end-to-end latency on the target workflow rather than inferring it from the words “two-pass.”

Viewer quality levels and delivery

Encoder passes are not the same thing as adaptive-bitrate packaging, server-side transcoding or simulcast. OBS describes transcoding as producing feeds at different resolutions, frame rates or bitrates (OBS: Transcodes / Transcoding). Its WHIP guide describes simulcast as sending multiple quality layers and identifies availability for OBS 32.1.0 and newer (OBS WHIP Streaming Guide). These are separate delivery choices; changing an encoder to multipass does not by itself create multiple viewer renditions.

Platform requirements

Check the streaming destination’s current ingest documentation for supported codecs, bitrate limits and keyframe interval. These requirements can change, so do not treat an old platform ceiling or a setting recommended for another service as current universal guidance.

A practical validation checklist

  1. Identify the job. Decide whether you are encoding a complete prerecorded source or processing live input. Choose full two-pass rate control only where the whole source can be analyzed before the final encode and that workflow fits your output goal.
  2. Confirm the actual encoder controls. In OBS, check the selected encoder and its current options. Use the encoder’s own documentation for pass behavior, rate control and preset names; do not assume x264, NVENC, AMD and Quick Sync settings are interchangeable.
  3. Check destination requirements. Look up the current ingest codec, bitrate and keyframe requirements for the service you will use before settling on output settings.
  4. Run a representative test. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, preset and typical content. For live input, verify that encoding keeps pace at real time or faster and that frames are not being dropped.
  5. Evaluate the result. Inspect visible quality and bitrate behavior while monitoring CPU or GPU load and end-to-end latency. Change one relevant setting at a time, then test again.

Common problems and what to check

  • The live encoder falls behind: The configuration may exceed available processing capacity. Reduce processing demand by adjusting the resolution, frame rate or preset, then test again and confirm throughput against the real-time threshold.
  • The stream buffers or breaks: Check whether encoding is below real time, whether buffering is accumulating in the pipeline, and whether the destination’s ingest requirements are met. Google warns that below-1x VP9 encoding cannot keep pace with live input.
  • Latency is higher than expected: Investigate buffering in the encoder and the rest of the pipeline. For x264, GStreamer documents tune=zerolatency as one possible buffering workaround, with a possible quality effect; validate the result rather than assuming it is a free improvement.
  • GPU load is too high with NVENC: NVIDIA’s OBS guide identifies GPU utilization as a possible reason to turn Look-ahead off. Re-test the complete stream after any change; recommendations depend on hardware and configuration.
  • The picture or bitrate is worse after tightening a target: Revisit rate-control tolerance and the encoder’s quality settings. FFmpeg cautions that reducing one-pass bitrate tolerance too much can harm quality; exact controls differ by implementation.
  • A tutorial’s setting is missing or named differently: Confirm the OBS version, selected encoder and encoder documentation. OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options page is version-specific to OBS 31.0, and its choices should not be assumed to exist for other encoders.
