To estimate the electricity charge for a 24/7 YouTube stream, measure the average power draw of the equipment you want to count, convert it to kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your utility’s applicable per-kWh rate:
Estimated energy cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × operating hours × electricity price per kWh.
For a 30-day month, continuous operation is 720 hours; for a 365-day year, it is 8,760 hours. The result is only as useful as its wattage measurement and rate: a power supply’s rated capacity is not the computer’s actual draw, and a national or state average is not necessarily your tariff.
Calculate energy use, then the charge
Watts measure power at a moment in time; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy used over time. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) defines a kilowatt-hour as one kilowatt used for one hour. See its electricity measurement explainer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Find average power in watts. Measure the equipment while it is doing the work you want to estimate. Use an average over a representative interval rather than a brief peak.
- Convert watts to kilowatts. Divide the average watts by 1,000.
- Multiply by operating hours. For continuous use, 24 hours per day × the number of days in the period gives the hours.
- Multiply kWh by your electricity price. Use the applicable dollar-per-kWh rate and state which bill charges you have included.
In shorthand: kWh = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours; energy charge = kWh × $/kWh. The estimate scales linearly: double the wattage, hours, or rate and the calculated energy charge doubles.
Measure the equipment you are actually running
There is no defensible universal wattage for a “YouTube streaming PC.” Actual draw depends on the computer, encoder workload, connected equipment, and how the setup is used. EIA’s measurement guidance explains metering but does not give a generic creator-PC figure.

Ways to get a wattage input
- Plug-in electricity usage monitor: For compatible plug-connected equipment, use a monitor that reports watts and, if available, accumulated kWh. Measure while the stream workload is active and over a representative period. Confirm whether it measures just the computer or the whole power strip/setup.
- Utility meter or portal: Use interval or device-level data if your utility provides it at useful resolution. Capabilities vary; EIA notes that some advanced smart meters can track individual-device use.
- Manufacturer telemetry or an assumption: If direct measurement is unavailable, use the best documented estimate you have and label it as an assumption. A component’s rated maximum or a power supply’s capacity is not a measured average draw.
EIA describes how electricity use is measured, but does not endorse a particular retail monitor. Be clear about what the measurement includes and the period over which it was taken.
Choose a rate that matches your bill
For a personal estimate, use the per-kWh rate on your current bill or utility tariff, not an unrelated household’s rate. If your plan has time-of-use pricing, use a weighted rate that reflects when the equipment operates. Decide whether to include variable delivery, fuel adjustment, or other per-kWh charges; keep fixed monthly customer charges separate because adding one device generally does not change them.

EIA’s Electric Power Monthly includes state and end-use-sector average prices in Table 5.6.A. Its page listed July 2026 data, released September 24, 2026. These averages are useful for comparison, not a substitute for your own tariff. EIA explains that its average retail price is weighted from revenues and sales; its Electric Power Annual with final 2024 data (October 2025) notes that operating revenue can include energy, demand, customer-service, environmental, fuel-adjustment, miscellaneous, and tax components. A published average can therefore differ from the marginal per-kWh amount that applies to your household.
Worked example: a stated 100 W assumption
Suppose the measured average draw for the equipment being counted is assumed to be 100 W, and the applicable rate is assumed to be $0.20/kWh. These are illustrative inputs, not a typical-PC claim, a current U.S. average, or a hardware test.

| Period | Energy calculation | Energy-charge calculation | Estimated charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 days (720 hours) | 0.1 kW × 720 = 72 kWh | 72 × $0.20 | $14.40 |
| 365 days (8,760 hours) | 0.1 kW × 8,760 = 876 kWh | 876 × $0.20 | $175.20 |
Replace both assumed inputs with your meter result and bill rate. A calendar month does not always have 30 days, so use its actual hours when estimating a specific bill period.

Decide whether you are estimating the whole setup’s electricity charge or the incremental charge caused by streaming. For a whole-setup estimate, count the equipment drawing power at your premises that you intend to include: for example, the encoder computer, a dedicated encoder, continuously powered capture or audio equipment, and a router or modem. State the boundary.

For an incremental estimate, exclude equipment that would remain on anyway, or measure the difference between the ordinary setup and the streaming workload. Do not include viewers’ devices or YouTube’s remote infrastructure in a household electricity estimate. YouTube’s official live encoder settings guidance describes its streaming workflow and says YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for different devices and networks; it does not quantify the local computer’s power draw or the platform’s remote energy use.
Local equipment or a cloud service?
The calculation above estimates electricity at your premises; it is not a complete comparison of operating models. If you are deciding whether to keep local hardware running or use a hosted service, consider local energy cost, hardware purchase and replacement, service fees, storage needs, control, and dependence on home power and internet.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, looping them in the cloud rather than requiring your computer or home connection to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

Check the estimate before relying on it
- Confirm the wattage came from the actual operating setup, not a component’s rated capacity.
- Check whether your monitor measured only the encoder or also peripherals and networking equipment.
- Use actual hours for the bill period and the rate schedule that applies to those hours.
- Keep fixed monthly charges out of an incremental estimate unless the goal is to report the whole bill.
- Label assumptions plainly if you could not measure the load or determine the exact variable rate.
