When Twitch emotes stop working, first identify which kind is failing: native Twitch emotes, channel or subscriber emotes, or third-party emotes from BTTV, FFZ, or 7TV. If only animated emotes appear still, check Chat Settings before changing anything else. For a wider failure, check Twitch Chat’s status, test a native emote, then isolate the browser, extension, account, channel, or device causing the problem.
Identify what is failing
Twitch’s own global and channel emotes, subscriber emotes, and third-party emotes use different systems. A fix for one may not affect the others.

Use a known native Twitch emote as a baseline. If it renders but a custom emote does not, focus on that emote’s provider or channel access rather than reinstalling Twitch-related software.

Try these fixes in order
- Check Twitch Chat status. Visit Twitch Status and check the Chat component, not just video or the website. If Chat is degraded, wait for Twitch to resolve the incident and retest. Reinstalling extensions during an outage is unlikely to help.
- Confirm the emote should be available. Test another emote from the same category. Check whether you are signed into the right account and, for subscriber emotes, whether the subscription is active and includes the required tier. A channel may also have changed its emote code, prefix, or available emotes.
- If only animation is missing, check Chat Settings. In Twitch chat, open the gear icon and look for the animated-emote control in Chat Settings. Enable it and test a known animated emote. Twitch explains that disabling the control can show static versions instead of animation: Chat Basics. A static image alone does not mean the emote is broken.
- Try a private or incognito window. Open the same channel and test a native emote and the affected custom emote. If they work there, an extension, cookie, session, or cached resource may be involved. Private windows are a diagnostic, not a guaranteed clean test: browser settings and permitted extensions can still apply.
- Temporarily disable extensions. Start with BTTV, FFZ, 7TV, ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and other extensions that alter Twitch. Reload the page and test native emotes first. If those work, enable only the provider needed for the missing emote, reload, and test again; then add other extensions back one at a time. This isolates conflicts without needlessly removing everything.
- Update the browser or app. Twitch lists support for the two latest versions of Chrome and Firefox, the latest Edge, Safari, Opera, and Opera GX. Other browsers may work, but Twitch does not guarantee all functionality. Check your browser’s own About or Update page rather than relying on a fixed version number. - Clear Twitch site data if the problem persists. After disabling extensions, close Twitch tabs, clear site data for Twitch, restart the browser, sign in again, and test. Clearing cookies can sign you out and remove local site preferences, so save this step until simpler checks are done. Twitch’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends testing after disabling extensions and clearing cache and cookies.
- Compare another browser, device, or network. Try another supported browser and, if possible, another device or network. Temporarily test without a VPN or traffic-routing software. If the problem changes with the browser or network, it points toward local configuration or routing; if it follows the account or channel across devices, check access and channel availability.
Fix native Twitch and channel emotes
Native global emotes and channel emotes are handled through Twitch. If native emotes fail too, make sure you are signed in, reload the channel, and compare another channel. If only one channel is affected, investigate that emote’s availability before treating it as a site-wide rendering problem.

Subscriber emotes may require an active subscription on the account you are using, and some emotes may be associated with a particular tier. A streamer may have removed or replaced an emote or changed its code or prefix. These are possibilities, not proof that an emote was deleted. Twitch’s Subscriber Emote Guide explains channel emote management and prefixes.
If you are the streamer, open the Creator Dashboard’s Emotes area and confirm the emote is associated with the intended channel or tier, the code and prefix are correct, and its status is not pending, rejected, or disabled. Test as a separate viewer or in a logged-out browser where practical. Twitch identifies the Creator Dashboard as the place to manage subscription emotes, Bits tier emotes, and Cheermotes where applicable.

Emote access and payout eligibility are not the same thing. Twitch announced in May 2026 that some community tools, including emotes, would become available more broadly to eligible streamers, while payout eligibility remains tied to Affiliate or Partner status. Do not assume every streamer has identical dashboard permissions or monetization status; see Twitch’s announcement.
Fix BTTV, FFZ, or 7TV emotes
Third-party emotes only render for viewers using a compatible extension or integration, and only when the channel and provider make the emote available. The official Twitch mobile app should not be assumed to behave like an extension-enabled desktop browser.

BetterTTV (BTTV)
- Update BetterTTV and reload every open Twitch tab.
- Open its settings and confirm the relevant emotes, including animated BTTV emotes if applicable, are enabled.
- Check that you are on the expected Twitch account and channel.
- Temporarily disable other Twitch chat extensions and retest.
BetterTTV’s Chrome Web Store listing describes global and channel custom emotes and says to install the add-on and visit Twitch. If an update and controlled extension test do not help, consider reinstalling BTTV; there is no need to reinstall every Twitch extension at once.
FrankerFaceZ (FFZ)
Update FFZ, refresh open Twitch tabs, and test with other chat-modifying extensions disabled. FFZ notes that a store-distributed extension can lag behind a user-script version because of store approval delays, and its installation route varies by browser. Its site directs Safari users toward a user-script approach, and Edge users may need to allow extensions from other stores: FrankerFaceZ. Use a user-script loader only if you are actually following that installation route; adding one unnecessarily adds another extension to troubleshoot.

7TV
If only 7TV emotes fail, check whether 7TV is operational, confirm the channel has the emote enabled, update the integration, reload Twitch, and test with BTTV and FFZ disabled. The 7TV status page can help distinguish a service incident from a local problem, but a green status does not confirm that your extension or channel settings are correct.

Native Twitch emotes may work in the mobile app even when a third-party emote does not. Third-party support depends on the specific mobile client and its current version, so treat a third-party-only failure first as a client or integration difference—not as proof of an account problem. Do not expect a desktop browser extension to modify the official Twitch app.

- Update the Twitch app, force-close it, and reopen it.
- Sign out and back in, then test native emotes in another channel.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- If available, compare with Twitch in a mobile browser.
When emotes fail only in OBS, pop-out chat, or an overlay
First confirm the emote works in Twitch’s regular browser chat. OBS docks and browser sources do not necessarily share the browser extensions or settings installed in Chrome. An overlay provider may not support the third-party emote service, may be using a cached source, or may render only a static asset.
- Test a native emote in Twitch browser chat and in the affected OBS dock or source.
- Refresh the dock or browser source; if needed, recreate it and check the relevant add-on or overlay settings.
- For third-party emotes, confirm the overlay explicitly supports that provider.
- Compare the streamer’s local chat view with the broadcast output. A browser extension may change what the streamer sees without changing the messages or video viewers receive.
Quick isolation guide
- Native and custom emotes fail across devices: check Twitch Chat status, account/session, and network; contact Twitch if the issue persists.
- Only one browser fails: test extensions, site data, and browser updates.
- Only one device or app fails: check that client’s settings, update it, and compare another device.
- Only BTTV, FFZ, or 7TV fails: check that provider, its channel availability, and its integration.
- Only one channel fails: check subscription or tier access and ask whether the streamer changed the emote.
- Only animation fails: check Animated Emotes in Chat Settings, then compare clients.
- Only OBS or an overlay fails: troubleshoot that dock, source, or provider integration.
Contacting Twitch Support
If native emotes still fail across supported browsers and devices after the checks above, contact Twitch Support. Include the browser name and version, operating system, Twitch app version if relevant, channel URL, exact emote code, whether native emotes work, and whether the issue reproduces in a private window. Add reproduction steps and a screenshot or recording if possible, and note any VPN, extensions, or overlays involved.
