Here are the release details, story, creative team and confirmed home-video formats, plus what to know about streaming availability.
When did Twisters come out?
Twisters opened in U.S. theaters on July 19, 2024. Universal Pictures handled domestic distribution, while Warner Bros. Pictures handled international distribution, according to Amblin’s credits. The U.S. date should not be treated as a single worldwide release date.

Its home-video announcement also lists a gag reel, deleted scenes and featurettes on the production, effects, cast and vehicles; director commentary is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and digital. The official film page identifies a 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital Collector’s Edition.
What is Twisters about?
The story returns to storm chasing in Oklahoma. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate Carter, a former storm chaser who moved to New York to study storms remotely after a devastating encounter. Her friend Javi, played by Anthony Ramos, brings her back to Oklahoma for a scientific opportunity. There, she crosses paths with Tyler, a daredevil and self-described tornado wrangler played by Glen Powell. As a destructive tornado outbreak unfolds, Kate, Javi and Tyler must work together to survive.

Is Twisters a sequel to Twister?
Yes, in the sense that it is a current-day chapter in the fictional world of the 1996 film. It is not a direct continuation of the original characters’ stories: none of those characters return, the Associated Press reported. The new movie carries forward elements of that world, including the Dorothy sensors and references to the fictional Muskogee State University. It is best described as a standalone sequel with a new central cast.
