Donald Trump said he would direct federal agencies to identify and release government records about extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) and UFOs after accusing Barack Obama of disclosing classified information. The announcement began a records process; it did not establish that aliens have visited Earth or made contact with humans.
What did Trump say about releasing UFO files?
On February 19, 2026, Trump accused Obama of revealing classified information in comments about the possibility of life elsewhere. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I don’t know if they’re real or not,” and added, “I may get him out of trouble by declassifying.” The Associated Press reported the remarks the following day: Associated Press, February 20, 2026.
Trump then said he would direct the Secretary of War and relevant departments and agencies to begin identifying and releasing files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, UAPs, UFOs and related matters. That wording describes a review and release effort, not a guarantee that every government record would be made public immediately.
Did Obama reveal classified information about aliens?
Obama’s comments came in a podcast appearance with Brian Tyler Cohen. As the Associated Press reported, Obama said the universe is so vast that life elsewhere is statistically plausible, while clarifying that he had not seen evidence that aliens had made contact with humans. His statement was a broad inference about the likelihood of life beyond Earth, not a claim that contact had occurred or that he had seen evidence of it.

Trump accused Obama of disclosing classified information, but the cited reporting does not establish that Obama revealed a classified finding about extraterrestrial life. Trump himself said he did not know whether aliens were real.
Did the government release UFO files?
On May 8, 2026, The Washington Post described an initial public collection of agency photos, videos, documents and redacted interviews, including material associated with the Defense Department, FBI and NASA. Officials said additions were planned as records were declassified. The report did not provide a complete inventory of later releases, so it should not be read as a current total or comprehensive release log: The Washington Post, May 8, 2026.

What “unresolved” means
The Pentagon’s description, quoted by the Post, was: “The materials archived here are unresolved cases, meaning the government is unable to make a definitive determination on the nature of the observed phenomena.” In other words, the government could not determine what the cases involved. “Unresolved” is not an official finding that a sighting was extraterrestrial.
The records may document that an observation was reported or captured, but that alone does not identify its cause. A witness account, a photo or video, and a government document are different kinds of evidence; none should be treated as proof of an alien origin unless it supports that specific conclusion.

Are aliens real? What the released files show—and do not show
The announcement and the first collection described in the May report do not answer whether extraterrestrial life exists. Obama’s reported point was that life elsewhere is statistically plausible given the scale of the universe; he said he had seen no evidence of contact with humans. The Pentagon’s statement about the initial records was narrower: the cases were unresolved.
To evaluate any particular file, separate three questions: what was observed, whether officials identified a conventional explanation, and what evidence supports any proposed explanation. A record can establish that a report or observation exists without establishing what caused it.

Is the Obama Presidential Library UFO collection the same release?
No. The Obama Presidential Library’s FOIA 22-18746-F collection concerns John Podesta’s comments about UFO/UAP disclosure. It is a separate presidential-records collection, not part of Trump’s 2026 federal records initiative. The library’s finding aid describes it as selective and says it primarily contains emails, news articles and tweets; it may not include every responsive record. Records can be released in full, released in part or withheld under legal exemptions: Obama Presidential Library finding aid, FOIA 22-18746-F.
The finding aid lists 50 assets processed in 2025: six in Presidential Exchange Email (four released in full and two withheld), one NSC shared-drive asset released in full, and 43 White House Office shared-drive assets (five released in full and 38 withheld). Those figures describe this library collection only; they are not a count of files released under Trump’s initiative.
