On her first appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, which aired December 17, 2024, Michelle Obama reflected on the family fears behind Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, the lessons she inherited from her mother, holiday traditions, and the people who made the White House feel like home. The show’s recap, published two days later, presents these themes alongside other parts of the interview—not as a conversation solely about family.
Why Michelle Obama initially hesitated over the presidential run
Michelle Obama said she was afraid of the change and uncertainty that would come with Barack Obama running for president. She worried about uprooting their daughters, Sasha and Malia, who were seven and ten at the time, respectively. Her account does not make the decision sound easy: she described recognizing her fear and asking whether it should decide the family’s future.
As the show’s recap reports it, she eventually saw the campaign as a difficult experience the family could face together. She recalled thinking, “We can get through this; we’ve done hard things before.” She wanted to be able to tell her daughters that they had taken on something hard as a family and made it through, rather than say they had declined because she was afraid of change. The reflection is about choosing how to respond to fear, not about having none.
The Jennifer Hudson Show’s December 19 recap reproduces these remarks and identifies the girls’ ages in the context of the campaign decision.

How her mother’s wisdom shaped Overcoming: A Workbook
Obama connected the workbook to practical advice from her mother, who died in May 2024. She described the book as a love letter to her mother and said she hoped its guides, practices, and steps could help readers find tools of their own. The show describes Overcoming: A Workbook as a companion to The Light We Carry.
One prompt she shared asks readers to consider a time they felt afraid and examine what was behind the fear: “Is it a real danger, something you need to be afraid of? Or is it some story that you’ve told yourself about?” She also offered a concise message of affirmation: “Your voice matters, I see you, you got power.”

What she remembered about her mother and Jennifer Hudson
The interview also touched on Jennifer Hudson singing “Amazing Grace” at Obama’s mother’s funeral. Obama recalled that Hudson continued singing after leaving the stage and told her, “You brought us to our knees.” The moment linked the conversation’s themes of family and maternal influence to the personal loss Obama had experienced earlier that year.

The Obamas’ Christmas tradition and a hard-to-buy-for gift recipient
Obama said the family spent Christmas in Hawaii, Barack Obama’s home state. Describing him as difficult to shop for because he golfs, she joked, “There’s only so many golf balls you could get a dude.” What he wanted, she said, was “a nice letter. And he means it!” She also described herself as the person who paid attention to what each family member wanted and made Christmas happen. These are her recollections of the family’s tradition, not a claim about every year’s plans.
What she missed about the White House
Asked what she missed, Obama emphasized the people who worked there and cared for her family, including her daughters and mother. She said, “I miss every single person, from the folks who worked on the grounds to the head usher,” and described the residence as home for the family. Her answer focused on the staff and their care, rather than on the building or public role alone.
