The photographs trace the day from the Glass Coach and parade to a rain-sheltered family moment and the Buckingham Palace balcony. Her appearance was not an announcement that she had resumed full-time public duties.
Photos from Trooping the Colour 2024
The event’s visual story moves from ceremony to family moments: the carriage journey, arrival at Horse Guards Parade, watching the parade, gathering with her children, and appearing on the palace balcony as aircraft passed overhead. The Washington Post’s photo gallery documents these scenes, with photographs credited to agencies and outlets including Reuters, Getty Images, AFP/Getty Images, EPA-EFE/Shutterstock, and AP. Captions and credits identify images; they do not grant permission to reproduce them.
The Glass Coach journey
Catherine travelled in the Glass Coach with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The carriage images place the family within the formal procession, before the parade-ground ceremony began. The Washington Post’s gallery includes photographs and captions documenting the carriage and other moments from the day.
Arrival and the parade
At Horse Guards Parade, Catherine watched the ceremony with members of the Royal Family. The broad ceremonial scenes show the military scale of the occasion; closer images focus on the family observing the proceedings.

Family moments in the rain
Rain added umbrellas and sheltering moments to the day’s photographs. Gallery captions document Catherine with her children as they took cover, a more informal contrast to the carriage procession and parade.
The balcony and flypast
The family later appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the flypast. The balcony images complete the day’s visual sequence, shifting from the ground-level parade to the public-facing royal tradition above the palace forecourt.

Why Catherine’s appearance mattered
Trooping the Colour was Catherine’s first official public appearance since a church service on Christmas Day 2023. ABC News reported that she had undergone abdominal surgery in January and had been receiving chemotherapy since late February following a cancer diagnosis. In a statement published June 14, Catherine said her treatment was ongoing and that she hoped to join a few public engagements over the summer.
She also described the variability of treatment: “I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days.” The statement made clear that attending this event did not amount to a return to a full schedule. The Associated Press likewise clarified that the announced appearance was not a return to full-time public duties: Associated Press.

What Trooping the Colour commemorates
Held in London on June 15, 2024, Trooping the Colour is the annual parade marking King Charles III’s official birthday. The monarch’s actual birthday is different; the parade is traditionally held on the second Saturday in June. The Royal Family describes it as a gift from the British Army’s Household Division and “an opportunity for the household division to demonstrate their professional excellence and loyalty to the Crown.”
During the ceremony, a regiment’s colour—the flag—is carried through its ranks by a junior officer. The honour rotates among the five Foot Guards regiments. In 2024, Number 9 Company Irish Guards trooped its colour. The Royal Family said it was the first time an Irish Guards Public Duties Company had trooped on a Sovereign’s Birthday Parade and the first time the Irish Guards had trooped in front of King Charles III. The event account reported hundreds of military working horses and more than a thousand Household Division soldiers. The Royal Family’s event account provides the ceremonial details.
