Treasure is a 2024 drama about Ruth, a New York music journalist, and her father Edek, a Holocaust survivor, as they travel through Poland in the early 1990s. Directed and co-written by Julia von Heinz, it stars Lena Dunham as Ruth and Stephen Fry as Edek. The film is loosely based on Lily Brett’s novel Too Many Men.
What is Treasure about?
After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Ruth takes a trip to Poland with Edek, hoping to explore her family’s history and the places connected to it. Edek is reluctant to revisit the past, and he has his own agenda for the journey. Their route includes Warsaw, Łódź, Kraków and Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The story focuses on the tension between a daughter seeking answers and a father whose memories shape what he is willing to share. It is a fictional family story framed around memory and the repercussions of the Holocaust, not a documentary account of Ruth and Edek as real people.
Who made the film?
Julia von Heinz directed and co-wrote the film. Alongside Dunham and Fry, the cast includes Zbigniew Zamachowski. German Films presents Treasure as the third part of von Heinz’s Aftermath trilogy, which addresses the repercussions of the Holocaust in Germany and around the world. Bleecker Street’s film page provides official information about the film.

What book is Treasure based on?
The film is loosely based on Lily Brett’s novel Too Many Men. The word “loosely” matters: the available descriptions establish the connection, but not a faithful or scene-by-scene adaptation. Readers who want to follow the story’s literary roots can start with Lily Brett’s Too Many Men; the BFI describes the novel as partly autobiographical. Check the edition and current availability with a bookseller before buying.

Why the story is centered on a father and daughter
Ruth and Edek approach the trip with different needs. Ruth wants to investigate family history; Edek resists returning to painful memories and is not simply a guide to the past. That difference gives the film its central question: what can a family learn when its members remember, avoid or interpret the past in different ways?
In a BFI interview about the script, Stephen Fry described its emphasis this way: “A script can be idea-shaped or human-shaped. This was human-shaped”. The line points to the film’s focus on a particular relationship rather than treating Holocaust memory only as an abstract theme.
