Owncast can technically carry a radio-style live stream, but it does not make music from YouTube Music available for public rebroadcast. Owncast is a self-hosted destination that receives an RTMP feed from encoder software. For a public stream, use music you have permission to transmit; a YouTube Music subscription is not a broadcast licence.
What Owncast does—and what it does not do
Owncast is self-hosted live-streaming software. You provide a server, configure it, and send a broadcast to it with encoder software such as OBS. It can carry an audio-led show, but it is not a music library, a licensing service, or a tool for rebroadcasting YouTube Music. Owncast’s broadcasting documentation covers the technical connection and supported formats.
That distinction matters: technical ability to capture or transmit audio does not establish permission to use it. YouTube’s Terms of Service list publicly streaming music from the service as an example of use outside personal, non-commercial listening. The YouTube Paid Service Terms of Service, which state an effective date of February 11, 2026, also describe paid-service access as personal and non-commercial and restrict public presentations, subject to their stated copyright exception. Paying for YouTube Music therefore should not be treated as permission to rebroadcast its catalogue.
Use music you are allowed to broadcast
For a public radio stream, choose original music you control or obtain permissions that cover the intended public transmission and territories. Rights and exceptions can vary by jurisdiction and by how a stream is used; the service terms do not settle every legal question about a particular broadcast. Owncast supplies the technical destination, not music rights.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What you need to run Owncast
- A supported host on which to install and operate Owncast.
- Encoder software that can send an RTMP broadcast to your server.
- For a manual installation, ffmpeg and reachable web and RTMP ports. Owncast’s manual installation guide uses ports 8080 (web) and 1935 (RTMP) by default; host and cloud firewalls must allow the required traffic.
- A music source and stream format you have the right to transmit.
The manual installation guide covers Raspberry Pi arm64 and arm7 builds and says ARMv6 is unsupported. That identifies supported architectures, not a guarantee that a particular device will handle a given audience or workload.
Set up an audio-led Owncast stream
- Install Owncast and ffmpeg. Follow the manual installation guide for your host. Ensure the web interface and RTMP ingest ports are reachable through the relevant firewall rules. The documented defaults are 8080 and 1935; adjust network configuration if you change ports.
- Secure the first login. Change the default administrator password and stream key immediately. Do not reuse example credentials from documentation or leave a setup key exposed.
- Choose an encoder. Configure software such as OBS to publish to your Owncast server’s RTMP address, using the
/livepath and the stream key shown in your Owncast configuration. Encoder labels differ by application; use Owncast’s broadcasting setup guide alongside the encoder’s own instructions. - Set compatible audio and video formats. Owncast recommends AAC audio and H.264 video for broad documented compatibility. If the programme is audio-only in substance, an encoder may still send a video component; configure the actual output your encoder and audience playback require.
- Choose an audio bitrate for the source. Owncast gives 96, 128, 192, 256, and 320 kbps as example audio bitrate levels and notes that music-focused streams may call for a higher choice. These are configuration examples, not a universal optimum or a guarantee of perceived quality. Select a setting that suits the audio, available upload capacity, and expected listener connections.
- Test before relying on the stream. Check that Owncast receives the broadcast and that listeners can play it with the intended configuration. Observe server resources and network use under realistic conditions; stability depends on the host, configuration, and available capacity.
Limitations and responsibilities
- Rights remain with you to resolve. Owncast’s ability to accept a feed does not grant permission to transmit the music. YouTube’s Terms of Service specifically identify public streaming of music from the service as outside the stated personal, non-commercial use.
- You operate the infrastructure. With self-hosting, you are responsible for server setup and maintenance, network capacity, and stream uptime. The platform documentation explains technical configuration; it does not promise uptime for your particular installation.
- Compatibility is not the same as quality. H.264 and AAC are Owncast’s recommended formats for broad compatibility, while bitrate must be chosen for your programme and constraints. No single bitrate guarantees a good listener experience in every setup.
- Architecture support has limits. The manual guide lists Raspberry Pi arm64 and arm7 builds and excludes ARMv6; it does not establish performance for a particular audience size or stream workload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps running without a computer at home, streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not provide music rights, and it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. The first day is free with no card; the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
