Owncast on a VPS for YouTube Streaming: CPU, RAM, and Bandwidth Needs

Owncast VPS needs depend on transcoding and direct viewer delivery—not a universal CPU or RAM recipe. Learn how to estimate CPU, RAM and bandwidth, and keep Owncast and YouTube settings distinct.

There is no universal VPS specification for Owncast: CPU demand depends mainly on whether you transcode and how many output qualities you create, while direct-delivery bandwidth grows with the number of viewers and the bitrate they receive. Owncast can accept an RTMP broadcast and serve viewers through HLS; YouTube Live is a separate destination. The documented Owncast setup does not establish a built-in feature that forwards an Owncast stream to YouTube.

What a VPS is doing in an Owncast setup

Owncast accepts an incoming RTMP stream, converts it into short HLS segments and a playlist, and serves those segments to viewers. Depending on configuration, it can also create multiple quality variants. With direct delivery, the VPS therefore handles ingest, any video conversion and segmentation, and delivery of video to viewers.

YouTube Live is a distinct destination: an encoder sends video to YouTube using YouTube’s stream URL and key. Owncast’s setup documentation describes its own RTMP ingest endpoint and stream key; it does not document a built-in Owncast-to-YouTube forwarding workflow. If you want the same program on both Owncast and YouTube, plan a separately configured multi-destination encoder or relay, and verify that setup independently. The VPS’s additional outbound copy to YouTube consumes bandwidth beyond delivery to Owncast viewers.

CPU: size for encoding, not just audience size

Owncast says, “It is impossible to give a single answer for what the requirements are for you to run Owncast, or what it will cost.” Its CPU examples are rough observations, not guarantees; actual use varies with codec, bitrate, resolution and encoder preset.

Passthrough or transcoding

Configuration Owncast’s CPU description Practical implication
Single passthrough output Minimal Little conversion work, but the source format and bitrate constrain what viewers receive.
One transcoded output Light Conversion adds CPU work; actual demand depends on the input and encoding settings.
Two quality outputs Moderate Creating another variant adds processing work.
Three outputs or heavy compression Heavy Expect more CPU demand and test the exact workload on the target VPS.

Owncast offers a rough heuristic that one CPU core can often handle one transcoded output quality at 30 fps, but explicitly cautions that hardware varies. Do not treat this as a guaranteed “one core per output” sizing formula. Higher frame rates also raise server CPU demand.

A safe way to choose vCPU capacity

  1. Decide whether Owncast will pass through the source or transcode it, and list the output resolutions and frame rates you need.
  2. Begin with one output configuration at average settings, as Owncast recommends.
  3. Test the real stream on the VPS while monitoring CPU use and playback. Add output variants one at a time only if the server handles the workload.
  4. If performance is poor, reduce the number of variants, input quality or frame rate, or lower CPU-intensive encoding settings before increasing capacity.

RAM: no official universal minimum

The reviewed Owncast resource and video guides do not state a generic VPS RAM floor. A number detached from a specific deployment would imply more certainty than the documentation supports. Choose memory for the complete server workload, then monitor actual use under load; do not infer that CPU guidance also establishes a RAM requirement.

Bandwidth: calculate ingest and delivery separately

The broadcaster’s upload to Owncast is not the same as the VPS’s outbound traffic to viewers. For direct Owncast delivery, estimate sustained egress for each output using Owncast’s formula: bitrate in kbps Ă— concurrent viewers Ă· 1,000 = Mbps. Add the results for all output variants.

Example: sustained outbound throughput

At one 5,000 kbps output and 25 simultaneous viewers, Owncast’s current resource-requirements example works out to 125 Mbps sustained outbound throughput. Owncast gives a rough quick-reference estimate of about 200 viewers at 5,000 kbps on a 1 Gbps port. These are illustrative estimates, not guarantees about a particular VPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A provider’s advertised 1 Gbps port alone does not establish that the VPS can sustain that rate continuously or that its monthly transfer is unlimited. Before choosing a plan, check the exact allowance, sustained throughput limits, overage policy, region and traffic terms.

Estimate monthly viewer traffic

Owncast’s documented formula is (bitrate in kbps Ă— duration in seconds Ă— viewers) Ă· 8,000,000 = GB. For a two-hour stream at 4,000 kbps, its examples calculate 36 GB for 10 viewers, 90 GB for 25 viewers and 180 GB for 50 viewers. These are arithmetic examples, not a provider’s included transfer or a forecast of your audience.

If a separately configured process also sends a copy to YouTube, budget that outbound traffic independently. The bitrate chosen for YouTube determines the size of that additional stream.

1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. It automatically transcodes a live input into multiple playback formats for viewers.

Owncast broadcast settings

Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for the broadest compatibility, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its sample bitrate settings are:

Owncast output Sample bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 5,000 kbps
1080p at 30 fps 4,500 kbps
720p at 60 fps 4,000 kbps
720p at 30 fps 3,000 kbps

These are Owncast examples, not YouTube ingest recommendations. Owncast notes that H.265 and some other audio formats may be recognized at ingest, but its transcoding and playback compatibility are assured only for H.264 and AAC.

Keep the keys and endpoints distinct

For YouTube, enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. For Owncast, use its own RTMP /live endpoint and stream key; its installation documentation lists port 1935 for RTMP ingest and port 8080 for the web interface. A stream key authorizes an encoder to send to its destination, so keep it private and use the key belonging to the service you intend to reach.

When viewer delivery outgrows direct VPS bandwidth

With direct delivery, every viewer consumes outbound traffic from the VPS. Owncast supports S3-compatible object storage for distributing video segments: the Owncast server uploads one copy of each configured quality, and the storage service handles viewer-facing delivery. This can reduce the VPS’s viewer-egress burden, but it does not remove Owncast’s encoding work.

The trade-off is a different cost and operational profile: you take on storage and delivery charges, setup effort and another service to operate. Compare current storage, request and egress terms before choosing a provider; no particular provider price is established here.

Troubleshoot the common sizing problems

  • CPU stays high or playback struggles: Transcoding, multiple variants, heavy compression or a higher frame rate may be exceeding capacity. Try one output, reduce frame rate or source quality, and retest before adding VPS resources.
  • Viewers buffer while the streamer’s upload looks healthy: The constraint may be VPS outbound throughput or monthly transfer, not ingest. Estimate egress from each output’s bitrate and its concurrent viewers, then check the provider’s actual sustained and metered limits.
  • The VPS has a “1 Gbps” port but delivery still hits a limit: A port headline is not a promise of sustained speed or unlimited transfer. Confirm the plan’s traffic allowance, fair-use terms and overage rules with the provider.
  • Owncast works, but YouTube receives nothing: Owncast ingest does not itself establish forwarding to YouTube. Configure and verify a separate multi-destination encoder or relay, using YouTube’s own URL, key and ingest settings.
  • A viewer cannot play a chosen source format: Owncast’s documented compatibility assurance is for H.264 video and AAC audio. Use those formats when compatibility is the priority.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is specifically to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative rather than an Owncast-to-YouTube relay: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
