Accounts from the 2011 Hooligans in Wondaland tour, the 2014 Super Bowl halftime show and Philip Lawrence’s return to the stage in 2022 reveal different parts of that collaboration—but they do not establish today’s lineup.
Who are The Hooligans?
The Hooligans are the musicians who perform with Bruno Mars. A 2014 Hawaii Filipino Chronicle profile described them as an eight-piece band for Mars’s February Super Bowl halftime performance. That description belongs to that event; it should not be read as a definitive roster for later shows.
The same profile reported that the halftime show drew over 115.3 million viewers. That is the Chronicle’s contemporaneous figure, not an independently confirmed measurement in the available account. Its scale nevertheless makes the performance a striking historical example of the band appearing as part of a major televised event.
How did the stage help shape the 2011 tour?
The Hooligans in Wondaland tour offers a documented look at how production supported the music. In a 2011 interview with Live Design, production and lighting designer Cory FitzGerald described a stage built from square arches and video panels. The components could move and adapt to venues of different sizes, giving the show a visual structure that could travel rather than depend on one fixed room.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FitzGerald also described a deliberate mix of references. Mars wanted parts of the design to have an “Ed Sullivan Show” feeling, while a black-and-white treatment accompanied a James Brown cover. As FitzGerald put it, “Bruno didn’t want to get stuck in the idea that he’s an old-school guy, but there are some key elements that feel like a ’60s TV set where you have an Ed Sullivan Show vibe,” The examples are specific to this tour, but they show how staging and lighting could frame a performance without reducing it to nostalgia.
What did Philip Lawrence’s return reveal about the performance?
Philip Lawrence, a longtime Mars collaborator and performer, stepped away from touring in 2018. In an Evansville Living interview published September 21, 2023, he said Mars reached out about getting the old band back together, and Lawrence returned to perform in 2022. He described the return as feeling like coming home: “I’m just in gratitude now to be back,” he said.

Lawrence’s account also gives a practical glimpse of how much a live show depends on movement as well as music. After his time away, he remembered the songs and performance steps but initially forgot stage logistics: where to leave a microphone, which side to enter from, and where his tambourine belonged. “What I forgot was the transitions,” he said. Those details help explain how coordinated stage movement can make a performance appear effortless to an audience.
How did the Las Vegas residency approach audience connection?
In the same 2023 interview, Lawrence described the residency’s phone check as an experiment intended to improve audience connection. He said it worked well. That is his account of the approach discussed in the interview, not evidence of a universal or current phone policy at every Mars performance.

Taken together, the dated accounts show The Hooligans as more than accompaniment: the band performed within a carefully staged production, and Lawrence’s return illustrates the rehearsed cues and transitions that hold a live show together. They document particular moments from 2011, 2014 and 2022, rather than a single unchanging format. They do not establish a current member list or describe the production of Mars’s present-day shows.
