Owncast and YouTube RTMP Settings for Airtel Broadband

Owncast and YouTube need separate URLs and keys. Here are Owncast’s encoder settings, Airtel upload guidance and fixes for common connection failures.

There is no single Airtel-specific RTMP preset for Owncast or YouTube. They are separate destinations: use the server URL and key provided by YouTube for YouTube Live, and your Owncast host, RTMP port, path and key for Owncast. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Start with Owncast’s suggested encoder settings, then choose a bitrate your Airtel connection can sustain in practice—not one inferred from its advertised plan speed.

Owncast and YouTube use separate RTMP settings

In your encoder, configure a separate output for each destination if you want to send the same programme to both. Each output needs its own endpoint and stream key; do not paste the Owncast key into YouTube’s settings or vice versa. This is a practical configuration approach, not a universal one-click relay prescribed by either service.

Destination Endpoint and protocol Where the key comes from What must be reachable
YouTube Live Copy the current server URL from YouTube’s Live Control Room; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube Live Control Room YouTube’s ingest service; use the URL and key shown for your stream.
Owncast Default endpoint: rtmp://your-owncast-host:1935/live. Enter the key separately, or append it as /live/<key> if the encoder requires a single URL. The Owncast stream key configured for your server Your Owncast host and its RTMP listening port, normally TCP 1935.

Owncast’s web interface defaults to port 8080. These are Owncast server settings, not substitutes for YouTube’s ingest details. If the Owncast web interface or RTMP endpoint must be accessed from outside your network, its ports or reverse-proxy routes need to be reachable. See Owncast’s broadcasting setup and manual install guide.

Owncast encoder settings to start with

Owncast recommends H.264 video, AAC audio and a keyframe every two seconds. Do not leave the keyframe interval on Auto. In OBS, set the interval in seconds; in FFmpeg, -g is a frame count, so use twice the frame rate. For example, at 30 fps use a GOP of 60 frames, and at 60 fps use 120.

Resolution Frame rate Owncast suggested video bitrate
1920×1080 60 fps 5000 kbps
1920×1080 30 fps 4500 kbps
1280×720 60 fps 4000 kbps
1280×720 30 fps 3000 kbps

Owncast lists audio bitrate examples of 96, 128, 192, 256 and 320 kbps, from low through highest quality. These are Owncast’s suggested starting points, not Airtel-tested presets or guarantees. Match the output to your Owncast server’s processing capacity as well as the quality you need. Higher bitrate consumes more upload capacity and cannot improve quality indefinitely. The complete recommendations are in Owncast’s broadcasting documentation.

Choose a bitrate Airtel can sustain

An Airtel plan’s advertised speed is not a promise of sustained upload capacity at the time and place you stream. Airtel’s broadband information includes advertised tiers, while its terms publish 90th-percentile upload measurements for certain tiers. Those measurements describe Airtel’s reported population results, not your individual line; Airtel also notes that speed can vary with congestion and technical factors. Check Airtel broadband terms and the Airtel Xstream Fiber terms PDF for the terms that apply to your service.

  • UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
  1. Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your planned stream, including the usual household network activity.
  2. Choose a bitrate below the upload level your connection consistently sustains, leaving headroom for variation and other traffic.
  3. Test an actual stream and watch your encoder’s network or dropped-frame indicators. If the connection is unstable, lower the video bitrate or resolution and test again.
  4. If sending directly to both Owncast and YouTube, account for the combined outgoing traffic. This is a network-planning inference: the providers do not specify an Airtel-specific dual-output bitrate.

A documented conservative starting option for Owncast is 1280×720 at 30 fps and 3000 kbps video. It is not a guarantee that a particular Airtel connection or Owncast server will sustain it; reduce the settings if your tests show instability.

Set up the two outputs

  1. Get YouTube’s current details. Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and copy the server URL and stream key shown for your stream. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS option when available, and follow its current encoder guidance.
  2. Get Owncast’s details. Use your Owncast host, the default RTMP port 1935 and /live path, plus the key configured on your Owncast server. Keep this endpoint and key separate from YouTube’s.
  3. Configure distinct encoder outputs. Add one output for YouTube and one for Owncast if your encoder supports multiple outputs. Enter each destination’s own URL and key. Check the encoder’s documentation for how it handles simultaneous outputs; the services do not establish one universal fan-out method.
  4. Apply and test the encoding profile. Use H.264 video, AAC audio, a two-second keyframe interval and an Owncast bitrate/resolution profile appropriate to your measured upload and server capacity.
  5. Verify each destination independently. Confirm the stream appears at YouTube and that Owncast receives it. If one destination fails, diagnose its URL, key and server path separately rather than changing both outputs at once.

Troubleshoot disconnections and failed outputs

  • Wrong destination or key: Re-copy YouTube’s current stream URL and key for the YouTube output. For Owncast, verify the hostname, port, /live path and locally configured key. The keys are not interchangeable.
  • Owncast cannot receive the stream: Confirm Owncast is running and TCP 1935 reaches the server through its firewall or network rules. If viewers also need the web interface, verify its route or default port 8080. Check the server setup in the Owncast manual install guide.
  • Upload instability or dropped frames: Test sustained upload and monitor encoder indicators during a real test stream. Lower bitrate or resolution if upload varies or is insufficient; Owncast identifies unstable networks and bitrate above sustainable upload as potential causes of disconnection.
  • Wi-Fi may be the local weak point: Connect the encoder computer to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. Airtel recommends a network cable for troubleshooting. A wired test can help isolate Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot resolve upstream congestion, excessive bitrate, blocked ports or server processing limits. See Airtel’s Xstream Fiber troubleshooting guidance.
  • Only YouTube fails: Refresh the YouTube-provided URL and key, then follow the current encoder diagnostics in YouTube’s live encoder help.
  • Only Owncast fails: Check Owncast’s server status, key, RTMP address and port, plus firewall or security rules. Confirm that the configured listening port has not been changed.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

RTMP settings only establish how the encoder connects; they do not grant rights to stream the programme. Before broadcasting a documentary, soundtrack or other third-party material, make sure you have the necessary rights or permission. YouTube’s current rules and account-specific live-stream restrictions can change, so check the requirements shown in YouTube Studio and its applicable policies before scheduling a broadcast. A technically successful connection does not establish that content is authorized or eligible to remain live.
