If Paramount+ will not open, keeps crashing, buffers, shows a black screen, or rejects your sign-in on Roku, start by finding out whether the problem is the title, the service, your account, the network, or the Roku app. Work through these ten checks from least disruptive to more involved; a factory reset is not a routine fix for a problem limited to one app.
These instructions target Roku players, Streaming Sticks, and Roku TVs in the United States. Menu labels and subscription options can vary by model, Roku software, and country.
First, identify what is failing

1. Check for a service issue or a title-specific failure
- Try a different Paramount+ movie or episode.
- If possible, try the same title in Paramount+ on a phone or computer using the same account.
- Open another streaming app on Roku.
If several Paramount+ titles fail on multiple devices while other services work, the issue may be with Paramount+ or your account. Check Paramount+’s official support channels and try again later instead of repeatedly reinstalling the Roku app. If other titles play, report the exact title and episode to Paramount+; repeated device resets are unlikely to fix a title-specific playback issue. 2. Test Roku’s internet connection
On Roku, go to Home > Settings > Network > Check connection. If the test reports a problem or other apps also buffer, address the connection before focusing on Paramount+.
- Restart your modem and router, then let the connection come fully back before testing again.
- Move the Roku closer to the router if practical, or use Ethernet if your model and setup support it.
- Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, and other streams temporarily.
A connection test can help identify a local network problem, but a successful result does not prove that every streaming path is trouble-free. Roku’s content playback guidance also points users to connection quality and service-provider checks.
3. Restart Paramount+
- Return to the Roku Home screen and highlight Paramount+.
- Press the Star (*) button on the Roku remote.
- Select Restart, if that option appears, and reopen the app.
This is a quick, low-disruption way to discard temporary app state. Not every Roku interface offers the same option. Roku’s app troubleshooting guidance recommends trying an app restart before more disruptive steps.
4. Restart the Roku itself
Use the software restart rather than simply pressing the TV remote’s power button:
- Roku player or Streaming Stick: Home > Settings > System > System restart.
- Roku TV: Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. Some models do not show a Power submenu; choose System restart wherever it appears.
If the menus are unavailable, unplug the Roku from power for at least 10 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the Home screen to load. On a Roku TV, pressing the TV’s power button is not necessarily a system restart. Roku documents restart options in its system restart instructions.

5. Check for a Paramount+ app update
- Highlight Paramount+ on the Roku Home screen.
- Press Star (*).
- Select Check for updates, then wait for any update to finish.
- Open Paramount+ and test it again.
Roku recommends updating a channel when it crashes or will not open. Paramount+ also advises Roku users to keep its app current in its Roku streaming help page. App versions depend on the device and rollout; use the version shown on your Roku rather than assuming a universal number.
6. Update Roku system software
Go to Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Install any available update and let the Roku restart if prompted. Reopen Paramount+ afterward; if the app still fails, check for a channel update again.
An “up to date” result does not rule out a stuck app session, account issue, weak connection, or service-side problem. Roku’s app troubleshooting page gives the current software-update path.
7. Verify the account and sign in again
If Paramount+ opens but sign-in loops, activation fails, or subscription content is missing, check the account before reinstalling:
- Confirm you are using the email address for the account that owns the subscription.
- Sign out in Paramount+ if possible, close and reopen the app, and sign in again.
- If you subscribed through Roku, check the subscription under your Roku account’s subscriptions. If you subscribed directly, check with Paramount+.
- For activation, use the exact code currently displayed and Paramount+’s official activation flow. Do not share passwords or activation codes publicly.
- If other household members are streaming, check whether you have reached the simultaneous-stream limit for your plan. Paramount+’s U.S. service page currently lists up to three streams; terms can vary by plan or billing arrangement.
Roku explains that a subscription may be billed by Roku or directly by the streaming provider, and the billing route affects where to manage it. See Roku’s subscription information and its playback troubleshooting guidance. Do not start a second subscription until you have checked whether an existing one is active.

8. Remove and reinstall Paramount+
Reinstalling is more disruptive than restarting or updating because you will need to sign in again. If the earlier steps do not help:
- Highlight Paramount+ on the Home screen and press Star (*).
- Select Remove app or Remove channel, then confirm.
- Restart the Roku.
- Open the Roku Streaming Store, search for Paramount+, and add the official app again.
- Launch the app and sign in.
Roku’s app-specific steps advise restarting after removal before adding the channel again. If Remove app is missing, do not factory-reset immediately. Restart the Roku, check for system updates, and try again. If the option remains unavailable, verify how Paramount+ is set up on the device and ask Roku or Paramount+ support.
9. Resolve “Can’t run app” or “Insufficient memory”
These messages can relate to available device resources or an internet connection; they do not by themselves prove the Roku hardware is defective. Remove an app you no longer use by highlighting it on the Home screen, pressing Star (*), choosing Remove app, and confirming. Restart Roku and try Paramount+ again.
Roku’s “Can’t run app” guidance also recommends unplugging the device for at least 10 seconds. Some Roku models have a microSD card slot, but that is model-dependent—not a universal fix.
10. Reset the network connection, then escalate if needed
Use this only after simpler connection checks. Go to Home > Settings > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset > Reset connection. The Roku restarts and you will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi. Have your network name, password, and any special network settings ready. Roku describes this process in its restart and network-reset guidance.

If Paramount+ still fails, or several apps remain broken, contact the relevant provider rather than repeating resets indefinitely. Roku advises contacting the app provider for app-specific sign-in, playback, sound, captions, or content problems.

Paramount+ crashes back to Home or freezes on its logo
Restart the app and Roku, then check for app and system updates. If the failure persists only in Paramount+, sign out and back in or reinstall the app. If multiple Roku apps crash, prioritize system software, available storage, and the network.
Black screen, with or without sound
Try another title and another app, then restart Paramount+ and Roku. If the Roku is a separate player or Stick, check its HDMI connection and the TV’s selected input; test another HDMI port or display if available. If the picture problem appears only in Paramount+, it is not proof of an HDMI fault. Roku notes that intermittent issues can involve connections as well as app or network trouble in its device troubleshooting guidance.
Buffering or poor picture quality
Run Roku’s connection test, reduce competing network traffic, and improve the Roku’s connection to the router. Do not assume a single internet-speed threshold will solve every case: the needed bandwidth depends on conditions and video quality, and no universal Paramount+-specific threshold is established here.

Check the account email, billing route, subscription status, and the activation code. A recently changed password or an account entitlement issue can also require action from Paramount+. Never give your password or a current activation code to someone in a public forum or unsolicited message.

Audio is missing or out of sync
Test another title and another app to see whether the issue is specific to Paramount+. Restart the app and Roku. If multiple apps have the same sound problem, check the TV or audio equipment and connections; contact the relevant provider with the exact symptom if it persists.
Advanced network checks
If Paramount+ alone fails on Roku after the standard steps, and you use a VPN, custom DNS, network-level ad blocker, or mesh-router controls, temporarily disable that setting or test the Roku on a phone hotspot if practical. These are diagnostic tests, not guaranteed Paramount+ fixes. Restore your original network settings afterward and avoid making permanent router-security changes unless you understand their effects.
Who should you contact?
- Paramount+: the app alone fails after updating or reinstalling; a title fails across devices; or you see sign-in, billing, entitlement, playback, or content-specific trouble.
- Roku: multiple apps fail, the Roku cannot connect, the app cannot be removed, or the device has broader software or resource problems.
- Your internet provider: the Roku connection test fails or several devices and services have connectivity problems.
Before contacting support, note your Roku model, Roku software version, Paramount+ app version if displayed, exact error wording, whether other apps work, whether Paramount+ works on another device, billing route, and whether a hotspot test changes the result. Use official Roku support and Paramount+ channels; avoid phone numbers from unofficial pages, unsolicited pop-ups, or search-result documents.
Why a factory reset should not be the next step
A factory reset erases device configuration and is disproportionate when only Paramount+ is failing. Reserve it for persistent, device-wide Roku problems after other troubleshooting has failed, and only when you have the information needed to set up the Roku again. A Paramount+-only issue is better escalated to the app provider after the app, account, and connection checks above.
