- Age: 74, according to Forbes (Marc Berman, February 18, 2026). Noonan was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, on April 12, 1951, according to the Guardian obituary by Ryan Gilbey (February 24, 2026), which gives the same birth date used in other reports.
- Confirmation: Fred Dekker shared the news. The Guardian reproduced his tribute, which begins, “It’s with great sadness that I share the passing of Tom Noonan.”
- Cause: Not announced in the reports consulted, including the Guardian (Benjamin Lee, February 18, 2026), the Los Angeles Times (Christie D’Zurilla, February 18, 2026) and Forbes. No cause should be inferred from the coverage.
His best-known screen roles

Noonan also appeared in Synecdoche, New York and Anomalisa. The reports cited here do not specify his character in Synecdoche, New York, so no role is attributed to him in that film below. In Anomalisa, the Guardian says he voiced all but two characters and played more than 40 roles in the film version.
Francis Dolarhyde and the source novel
Noonan’s most discussed role was Francis Dolarhyde, the killer nicknamed the Tooth Fairy in Manhunter. The film adapts Thomas Harris’s 1981 novel Red Dragon, so readers who want the story as written can start with the book. Noonan’s performance is often remembered for its quiet, unsettling calm rather than for overt menace.

In the Guardian obituary, Noonan explains his approach to the part with this line: “Making ‘bad people’ seem human is the key to making them scary.” That idea explains why his villains tend to be memorable: they are not caricatures. The same obituary also describes tenderness in his performances, so his career should not be reduced to villains alone.
The Guardian also quotes him on how he came to accept the role: “I proceeded then to turn it down about five times.” In that account, drawn from an interview with Filmmaker magazine, he says he was holding out for a higher fee. The longer version comes from that secondary report of the interview.

Stage, writing and directing
Noonan started in off-Broadway theatre and worked at the experimental La MaMa theatre company. He had studied pre-med at Yale before leaving, and he played guitar and piano in bands and wrote music for plays before moving into acting, according to the Guardian obituary.
His breakthrough came in 1978, when he originated the role of Tilden in the first production of Sam Shepard’s Buried Child.

He also wrote, directed and acted in film versions of his own plays. The clearest example is What Happened Was …, adapted from his play and starring Noonan and Karen Sillas. The Guardian reports that the film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. The Los Angeles Times reports that the film also earned Noonan the Waldo Salt screenwriting award at Sundance.
