Tom Cruise’s dramatic descent at the Paris 2024 Olympic Closing Ceremony was a cinematic handover, not a sporting event or a medal win. He rappelled into Stade de France, received the Olympic flag from Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass, and rode away by motorcycle as the ceremony turned toward the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
What happened during the closing ceremony?
The segment took place on 11 August 2024 at Stade de France. As part of the ceremony’s host-city handover, Cruise descended from the stadium roof on a rope, took the Olympic flag from Karen Bass, and departed on a motorcycle. The sequence was staged as a dramatic passage from Paris 2024 to Los Angeles, which will host the next Summer Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee describes the event as a star-studded Closing Ceremony featuring the formal handover to LA28. The Paris 2024 retrospective report likewise records the ceremony at Stade de France and the transfer of the Olympic flag to Los Angeles. The stunt was the show’s cinematic expression of that official transition—not a competition result.
Why was the Olympic flag handed to Tom Cruise?
The flag represented the transfer from one Summer Games host city to the next. Cruise’s appearance linked the ceremony’s Paris setting with Los Angeles, while Bass received the flag as the city’s mayor. His motorcycle departure extended the handover into a short action-film-style sequence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How high was Cruise’s rappel?
The actual measured height of the executed rappel is not established by the cited post-ceremony accounts. A Guardian article published before the ceremony described a planned height of 42 metres (137 feet), but that is a pre-event plan, not confirmation of how far Cruise descended during the show. The Guardian’s pre-event report should therefore not be treated as a verified measurement of the completed stunt.
