Todd Haynes’s Superstar Explained: The 1987 Karen Carpenter Film Before Barbie

Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story is Todd Haynes’s approximately 43-minute 1987 experimental biography, in which Barbie-style dolls perform Karen Carpenter, her family and the people around her. Its “Before Barbie” importance is a visual comparison—not a claim that Haynes’s underground film is a production or story predecessor to Greta Gerwig’s 2023 studio feature.

What Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story is

Haynes made Superstar as a compact, formally strange portrait of singer Karen Carpenter. Instead of casting human actors, he filmed Barbie-style dolls in miniature sets and used them to stage the events of Carpenter’s life. The result is neither a conventional music biography nor a children’s film. It is an experimental work that uses a familiar toy to make celebrity, illness and media packaging look newly artificial.

The film combines several modes. Doll scenes carry the dramatized biography; archival material supplies a connection to the real Carpenters; staged talking heads imitate television interviews; onscreen captions and public-service-announcement conventions add an institutional, instructional tone. The shifts are deliberate. They make the viewer move between apparent fact, performed testimony and visual shorthand rather than settling into the smooth authority of a standard television profile.

The film runs for roughly 43 minutes. That short length reflects its origins as an art-school experiment as much as it does its subject. Haynes was testing what happens when a feature-length emotional story is compressed into a miniature, visibly constructed world.

Why the dolls matter

A performer, not a product placement

The dolls are the film’s actors. They stand in for Carpenter, her brother Richard, relatives, doctors and other figures, so the audience must supply human emotion to plastic bodies whose faces and poses are limited. The device makes the biography recognizable while preventing ordinary identification from becoming effortless.

Haynes explained the idea in a 1996 BFI interview: “I was pretty certain people would identify with dolls as if they were actors, but on some level, you would become aware that you were cathecting onto this plastic object.” The tension in that sentence describes the film’s central experiment. You respond to a character, then notice the toy, and your response becomes part of what the film is examining.

Distance and empathy at the same time

A human actor could invite the viewer to treat the performance as a transparent window onto Carpenter. A doll cannot do that completely. Its plastic surface keeps reminding you that the scene is made, posed and mediated. At the same time, the doll’s stillness can make gestures of distress feel more concentrated: a turned head, a rigid posture or a figure placed alone in a room carries emotional force because the image is so stripped down.

This double effect is especially important for a story involving anorexia, public scrutiny and the conversion of private suffering into celebrity narrative. The film does not simply ask for sympathy. It asks how sympathy is manufactured by biographical conventions, photographs, interviews and familiar images of the famous.

How Haynes built the film

The doll idea came first

Haynes said he wanted to make a film with dolls before he knew which story to tell. After graduating from Brown, he wrote the script with Cynthia Schneider and shot the project at Bard College during its MFA summer program. Hearing one of the Carpenters’ songs led him to the Karen Carpenter story, giving the formal experiment a subject whose public image was already tied to polished performance and private pain.

A miniature biography with documentary signals

The production does not rely on doll tableaux alone. Its structure borrows signals from documentary and television biography:

  • Archival footage: real-world material anchors the dolls to the historical Carpenters.
  • Staged talking heads: interview-like appearances mimic the authority of television testimony while remaining obviously constructed.
  • Onscreen text: captions organize events and provide the explanatory confidence of a factual program.
  • Public-service-announcement conventions: instructional framing gives personal tragedy a supposedly clear social lesson.

These components keep changing the viewer’s position. One moment appears to document; the next exposes the mechanics of documentation. The film’s biography is therefore also a study of how biographies are assembled.

What the film is saying about celebrity biography

The Guardian’s 2016 review reads Superstar as a retelling that works inside familiar ways of packaging celebrity suffering while mocking them. That is a critical interpretation rather than a neutral production fact, but it helps explain why the film feels unsettling even when its events are recognizable.

Television biographies often arrange a life into legible stages: talent, success, warning signs, crisis and aftermath. Haynes reproduces that shape, then makes each stage look like a display. The dolls, captions and simulated interviews reveal how easily a person can be turned into an explanatory object. Carpenter’s illness is not treated as a sensational twist detached from media culture; it is shown within a system that repeatedly asks audiences to consume the suffering of famous people.

The film’s humor is part of that critique. The toy figures and deliberately artificial settings can seem absurd, but the absurdity does not cancel the tragedy. It exposes the strange coexistence of grief and entertainment in celebrity storytelling. Viewers may laugh at the miniature staging and then recognize that conventional television has also trained them to watch pain through polished, repeatable forms.

“Before Barbie”: what the comparison means—and does not mean

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) made the doll’s cultural image the subject of a large-scale studio feature. Haynes’s earlier film uses Barbie-style dolls as performers in a biography of Karen Carpenter. Both can be discussed through consumer imagery and the meanings attached to a plastic female figure, but they are not equivalent projects.

Comparison point Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story Barbie (2023)
Role of the doll A doll performs Carpenter and the people in her life; the toy is a filmmaking device. Barbie is the central character and subject of a studio narrative about the figure’s world and cultural meaning.
Primary subject A biographical account of a singer, family and illness. A fictional adventure built around Barbie, identity and social expectations.
Form and scale Approximately 43 minutes; experimental, miniature and assembled from documentary-like elements. A feature-length, mainstream production with substantially larger industrial resources.
Use of consumer imagery The toy’s familiarity creates distance from, and friction within, a story of celebrity suffering. The Barbie image is directly explored as a cultural and commercial phenomenon.
Circulation history Historical rights disputes affected public screenings and circulation. Released through the normal global studio distribution system.

The Guardian’s 2023 comparison offers a useful critical bridge between the films’ doll imagery. It should not be turned into a claim of direct influence or shared production lineage. Haynes’s film predates Gerwig’s by decades, but “before Barbie” is best understood as a way to orient viewers to an earlier use of a Barbie-like body—not as a statement that one film is the narrative blueprint for the other.

How Superstar reached audiences

Early difficulty finding screenings

In a 2015 BAFTA A Life in Pictures conversation, Haynes recalled struggling to find a New York venue willing to show the film. A small East Village screening became a turning point. Reviews by J. Hoberman in The Village Voice and Barbara Kruger in Artforum helped draw attention, and requests for screenings followed in other places.

Haynes also situated the film within a period when experimental filmmakers were bringing narrative, genre and spectacle into forms that had often resisted those elements. Superstar is experimental in technique, but it is also unusually easy to describe as a story. That combination helped it travel beyond a narrow gallery context even though its production was small.

The copyright dispute and withdrawal

The film’s circulation was later damaged by its unlicensed use of Carpenters songs. The Guardian reports that Richard Carpenter successfully sued and that the film was withdrawn from circulation in 1990. The BFI has also described an injunction obtained by A&M Records against public screenings. Haynes recalled that rights problems were already an imminent concern and that he expected the film’s opportunities to be limited.

Those accounts establish a historical dispute and withdrawal, not a comprehensive current ruling covering every territory, private showing or possible future license. It is therefore more accurate to call Superstar a film whose public circulation was historically restricted than to make an absolute claim that no lawful screening can ever occur.

Can you watch the film now?

Availability is unusually difficult to state with certainty. A JustWatch US listing crawled recently reported no streaming offer. That is a snapshot of the service’s United States catalog at the time of its crawl, not proof that the film is unavailable everywhere and not a legal opinion.

Because rights and screening permissions can vary by country, institution and event, viewers should check current programs from museums, cinematheques, universities and film archives rather than assuming that a search result represents worldwide availability. Do not treat unauthorized uploads as evidence of lawful circulation. The film’s rights history is precisely why a legitimate listing may disappear or reappear without warning.

What to look for when viewing or discussing it

  1. Separate the historical subject from the form. Notice what the film says about Carpenter, then notice how dolls, captions and interviews tell you to understand her.
  2. Track changes in apparent authority. When an image resembles a television report or public-service announcement, ask what makes it look factual and whether the surrounding scene supports or undermines that authority.
  3. Watch your own identification. The plastic figures are designed to produce emotional investment and immediate distance. Both reactions are part of the experience Haynes described.
  4. Notice the role of music and rights. The songs connect the film to the Carpenters’ public identity, while their unlicensed use ultimately affected whether audiences could continue to see the work.
  5. Keep the Barbie comparison precise. Compare the function of the doll, the scale and the circulation history; do not infer influence that the available accounts do not establish.

Why the film still matters

Superstar remains significant because its formal question is also an ethical one: how can a filmmaker represent a real person’s suffering without reproducing the mechanisms that turn suffering into consumable celebrity content? Haynes does not solve that problem by pretending the camera can become invisible. He makes the mediation visible through toys, miniature sets, borrowed television language and abrupt shifts between documentary cues and staged performance.

The film also demonstrates that experimental cinema can be narratively direct. A viewer does not need specialist knowledge of avant-garde film to understand the basic biography, yet the familiar story is continually made strange. That accessibility helped the work attract attention beyond its initial setting, while its unusual form gives critics material to debate decades later.

Seen beside Gerwig’s Barbie, the film offers a reminder that a doll can function in radically different ways on screen. It can be a character, a cultural symbol, a commodity, or—as in Haynes’s film—a performer whose artificial body exposes the way biographies are staged. The comparison is valuable only when those differences remain visible.
