If pandemic fiction still holds your attention, this is a tense, character-focused series to put on your list.
What is To the Lake about?
Netflix describes the premise this way: “Facing the end of civilization when a terrifying plague strikes, a group risks their lives, loves — and humanity — in a brutal struggle to survive.” The story follows families in Russia as the outbreak threatens ordinary life and forces them into dangerous choices. The plague is a fictional story device, not a guide to real-world medical or emergency decisions.
The series’ appeal is not just the catastrophe itself: survival pressure puts relationships and competing loyalties under strain. The result is a mix of outbreak drama and wilderness survival, with a bleak setting that suits the story’s sense of escalating instability.
How many episodes are there?
Netflix’s North America catalog lists To the Lake as a 2020 drama with eight episodes. Its catalog page classifies the show as Russian, sci-fi, wilderness survival, thriller, and based on a book. The listing does not identify that book, so its title should not be assumed from the catalog entry alone. Netflix’s official series listing.

Should you watch it dubbed or with subtitles?
Netflix lists Russian as the original audio and shows English audio and subtitles among the options on the North America listing. Audio and subtitle tracks can differ by country and may change, so check the title’s audio and subtitles menu in your own Netflix catalog.
The original Russian audio with subtitles is a good choice if you want to hear the performances in the language the series was made in. That is also the preference expressed by BGR writer Chris Smith in his 2020 recommendation; it is a viewing preference, not a requirement. If dubbing makes the show easier for you to follow, choose an available dub instead.

Netflix lists Viktoriya Isakova, Kirill Käro, and Aleksandr Robak as the series’ stars. Its broader cast listing includes Maryana Spivak, Eldar Kalimulin, and Viktoriya Agalakova. BGR’s 2020 article identifies Pavel Kostomarov as director and Yana Vagner and Roman Kantor as writers.
