Those are company claims, and the mismatch matters.
No dated personal photos or details for the title’s supposed tattoo are available here, so this article does not present a fabricated first-person before-and-after. Instead, it explains what the published comparisons and customer accounts can—and cannot—show about the fading process.
What an Ephemeral tattoo is—and is not
Ephemeral tattoos are applied with a needle beneath the skin’s surface, rather than transferred onto the skin like a decal. The company says its ink is designed to break down over time. That design goal does not make the tattoo’s fading date predictable for any one person.
Ephemeral describes its ink as containing medical-grade bioabsorbable polymers, color additives used in food and cosmetics, and a water-based carrier. These are the company’s product descriptions, not evidence of FDA approval. The FDA says tattoo inks have not been approved for injection into skin: FDA: Tattoos and Permanent Makeup Fact Sheet.

How long does an Ephemeral tattoo take to fade?
Ephemeral publishes two different two-year estimates. Its current “How Ephemeral Ink Works” page says 90% of clients can expect fading within two years and 98% within three. The company’s 2024 reformulation update says 95% can expect fading within two years. Both figures are company-published estimates, not independently validated population-level results, and the two-year figures do not match. Neither means a specific tattoo will be completely invisible by the deadline.
The company says its earlier projection was 70% within two years, based on prelaunch studies across hundreds of tattoos, and that a larger real-world customer dataset led it to revise expectations in 2023. Its 2024 update reports a customer count of 20,000; that is the company’s count, not an independent clinical sample. The update also describes a refund guarantee for studio customers whose tattoos remained after three years. These are company descriptions of its data and policy, not independently audited findings. Individual outcomes reported in the media show why a target timeline should not be read as a personal deadline. In a March 18, 2024 report, The Independent described a customer whose tattoo was still visible two years after application and reported complaints from hundreds of former customers about tattoos lasting beyond the original timeframe. Those accounts illustrate possible variation; they do not establish the proportion of all customers whose tattoos remain visible. The company’s CEO, Jeff Liu, told the newspaper, “We consider any disappointed customer to be a major shortcoming on our part.” The Independent’s report.
What fading may look like
Ephemeral says the first visible change is often a loss of saturation, with dark black shifting toward lighter gray. A tattoo may look less crisp or prominent while remaining visible; fading is not the same as disappearance. The company says each person’s fade looks different, and that ink amount, design density, line weight, shading, placement, application depth, and healing can affect the result. It also says heavier linework and more ink generally add time.

Ephemeral’s 2024 update shows company-selected comparisons of its prior and reformulated inks: fading at the one-year mark and line crispness at one month. The company says the newer formulation reduces variability and improves linework. A meaningful before-and-after comparison should identify the tattooing date, elapsed time, body location, and formulation if known. The images should show the same tattoo under comparable lighting and framing. A distant, poorly lit image cannot establish that a tattoo has disappeared; a faded but still visible mark should not be labeled “gone.”

Aftercare and safety
Follow the tattoo artist’s specific healing instructions. Ephemeral advises avoiding irritants and scratching, keeping the tattoo out of pools and the ocean for at least a month or until the skin is repaired, whichever takes longer, moisturizing, and using sunscreen or protective clothing. Its guidance does not say these steps speed up fading. See Ephemeral’s aftercare guidance.
The FDA notes that tattooing can involve infection and allergic-reaction risks. Contact a health professional if the area does not heal or a rash appears, particularly if accompanied by fever, and tell a health professional about tattoos before medical imaging. The FDA also says it does not approve tattoo-removal ointments, creams, or do-it-yourself kits; such products may cause rashes, burns, or scars. Do not use a removal cream as a quick fix. Ephemeral’s current FAQ directs interested customers to approved Artist Partners. The Independent reported that the company announced the closure of its U.S. studios in September 2023 and planned to sell ink to existing studios and artists. That history does not confirm that a particular partner, location, appointment, or ink formulation is currently available. Check directly with Ephemeral and the artist before booking.
