A 3D model built from a 2022 deep-sea survey lets viewers inspect the Titanic’s wreck site as if the water had been removed. It is not a computer-generated reconstruction of the intact liner: Magellan Ltd. and Atlantic Productions made it from survey imagery and positioning data, recording the separated bow and stern and the debris around them.

What the Titanic digital twin is—and what it is not

The wreck lies about 3,800 metres (12,500 feet) below the North Atlantic. Its bow and stern rest roughly 600 metres apart, amid scattered wreckage. The scan represents that site as documented in 2022, rather than restoring the ship to its pre-sinking form. Magellan describes the project as a digital twin; here, that means a detailed, data-derived 3D record of a real place, not a live replica that updates automatically.

The survey covered the two main sections and the wider debris field, including structural fragments and objects on the seabed. It made the site easier to inspect as a connected whole than conventional underwater footage, but the central claim is exterior and site coverage: viewers should not infer that every interior space was scanned. USNI’s overview describes the scan’s ability to present the wreck as if the water had been removed.

How the survey became a 3D model

1. Remotely operated vehicles mapped the site

Magellan’s remotely operated submersibles, Romeo and Juliet, surveyed the wreck during a 2022 expedition. They spent more than 200 hours near the seabed and captured more than 700,000 images; reporting put the resulting data at about 16 terabytes. ABC News reports those survey figures. Accounts describe an expedition lasting about six weeks, while National Geographic later characterized the intensive scanning work as more than three weeks; these refer to different descriptions of the operation, not necessarily contradictory durations.

2. Overlapping images were positioned in space

To reconstruct a surface, photogrammetry compares many overlapping photographs taken from different angles. Navigation and positioning information helps place those views relative to one another. Processing identifies corresponding features across images and uses them to build a three-dimensional point cloud: a set of spatial points representing surfaces, with image-derived texture to show their appearance. Magellan says its point-cloud data includes Cartesian coordinates, timestamps and texture information for each point. This is a surveying and image-processing achievement; it should not be reduced to the claim that artificial intelligence alone created the model.

3. The point cloud became a navigable visual record

The point cloud and imagery were processed into a model that can be explored and used for visual analysis. Magellan says later processing of the original point cloud improved resolution and accuracy by more than 35 percent; that figure is the company’s claim, rather than an independently verified accuracy specification for every part of the wreck. The underlying data is also distinct from the public-facing images and video, which Magellan says were reduced to roughly 1080p for easier online viewing. Magellan’s project page describes the model and its processing.

What viewers can see in the scan

  • The bow and stern: Their present positions and the contrast between the bow’s recognizable form and the stern’s severe deformation.
  • Deck areas and structure: The boat deck and places where major features once stood, alongside signs of collapse and loss.
  • Small details: A propeller with a partially visible serial number is a notable example of what close inspection can reveal. It demonstrates detail in a specific area, not uniform sharpness or a guarantee that every rivet is legible throughout the site.
  • The debris field: Scattered fragments and objects, including reported shoes, bottles, statues and personal effects, can be considered in their spatial context rather than as isolated images.
  • Deterioration: Rust formations and structural damage are visible parts of the wreck’s present condition, not decoration added to make a historical scene.

The project’s significance lies in linking these views into a site-wide record. Earlier expeditions produced important images and video, but often showed particular sections or short sequences. A connected model makes it easier to revisit relationships between the wreck sections, damage and debris without treating every feature as a separate snapshot.

What the scan can—and cannot—tell us about the sinking

The model supplies evidence for questions about the ship’s final breakup: where fragments lie, how the hull is deformed, and the condition and position of fittings and equipment. Researchers can compare those observations with historical testimony, previous surveys, engineering analysis and other physical evidence. The scan does not, by itself, establish a complete explanation of the sinking. Seeing a feature is different from proving what caused it or when it changed.

  • Educational Value: Serves as a visually engaging way to learn about the historic Titanic and its tragic story.

National Geographic’s 2025 documentary, Titanic: The Digital Resurrection, presented interpretations involving an open steam valve, hull-fragment analysis and First Officer William Murdoch’s final actions. Those are interpretations advanced by the documentary’s expert team, not automatically settled conclusions simply because the wreck has been modeled in 3D. The National Geographic announcement describes the production and its claims; any disputed historical interpretation still calls for scrutiny against the wider evidence.

Why making a digital record matters

The wreck is changing. Saltwater corrosion, iron-eating microbial activity, rusticle formation, deep-ocean currents and structural collapse contribute to the loss or alteration of material. A survey therefore records a particular state of the site before further deterioration changes it. That baseline can support future comparison and study, as well as documentary and educational work. The Guardian’s coverage discusses both the debris field and the wreck’s deterioration.

Was the wreck touched during the survey?

The project reported that the submersibles did not touch the wreck, and the survey was conducted under rules intended to avoid physical interference. The expedition also included a flower-laying ceremony in memory of those who died. Non-contact imaging is less invasive than removing artifacts, but that does not establish that every aspect of deep-sea operations is impact-free. Vehicle visits, lighting, thruster wash and activity near a historic site remain stewardship considerations. USNI’s account reports the project’s non-contact approach.

Can the public explore the full-resolution model?

Not necessarily. Magellan’s site presents selected images and model views, and project footage has appeared in news coverage and documentary material. Those public presentations should not be confused with unrestricted access to the original point cloud and raw imagery. Magellan says its online images and video were reduced to about 1080p; its project page does not clearly offer the full-resolution source dataset as a free public download.

Titanic: The Digital Resurrection is a 90-minute National Geographic documentary produced by Atlantic Productions. The 2025 announcement named Disney+ and Hulu as streaming destinations, but streaming rights and availability vary by region and can change, so check the services in your location. The documentary is a way to see the scan and hear the production’s expert interpretation; it is not the same thing as independently navigating the full research dataset. No public consumer price or open full-dataset access terms are stated on Magellan’s project page.

How unprecedented is the detail?

“Unprecedented” is best understood as a description of the project’s combination of broad site coverage, high-resolution imagery and spatial reconstruction—not as a uniform technical accuracy standard. This is not the first 3D model of the Titanic of any kind. The more defensible distinction is a full-scale scan presented as a connected digital twin of the wreck site, rather than a model built only from partial footage or an imagined intact ship. National Geographic’s phrase “accurate down to the rivet” is promotional language; it should not be read as a guarantee that every surface has the same resolution or measurement certainty.
