Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffith’s relationship is both familial and public: they are mother and daughter, have shared screen credits, and have spoken together about women’s experiences in Hollywood. Hedren has also described Griffith in deeply affectionate terms. Those public records offer meaningful glimpses, but they do not tell the whole story of a private family relationship.

Mother and daughter, with a shared screen history

Hedren is Griffith’s mother, and their connection includes work in front of the camera. The Hollywood Walk of Fame lists Pacific Heights among their shared screen credits. That documented collaboration makes their relationship part of their professional histories as well as their family lives. Hollywood Walk of Fame: Tippi Hedren

How Hedren has described her love for Griffith

In its 2016 coverage of Hedren’s memoir, Vogue reported Hedren calling Griffith “the greatest love of my life.” It is a striking expression of affection, and it should be understood as Hedren’s own stated perspective—not as a complete account of how the two have experienced their relationship over time. Griffith’s place in Hedren’s memoir

Griffith’s connection to Hedren’s story is reflected in Tippi: A Memoir: the HarperCollins catalog entry lists a foreword by Griffith. The catalog describes the book as a 320-page biography published on November 1, 2016. Those details establish Griffith’s contribution, but do not indicate how much of the memoir focuses on their relationship. HarperCollins catalog listing via Google Books

A conversation across three generations

In 2017, NPR brought Hedren, Griffith, and Griffith’s daughter Dakota Johnson together for a conversation about women’s experiences in Hollywood. The interview offers a public view of three generations reflecting on the industry; it is not a full record of the family’s private history. NPR’s three-generation conversation

The story behind the photographs with Neil

TIME revisited photographs taken in 1971 that showed young Griffith in Hedren’s household with Neil, a lion. In its 2014 account, TIME reported that Hedren later called allowing the lion to roam around the family “stupid beyond belief,” acknowledging the danger involved. This is a vivid episode in the family’s history, but it cannot stand in for a complete account of Hedren’s parenting or of her relationship with Griffith. TIME’s account of the 1971 photographs

What public accounts can—and cannot—show

Taken together, the sources establish a mother-daughter bond, shared screen work, Griffith’s contribution to Hedren’s memoir, Hedren’s public expression of love, and a joint public conversation spanning three generations. They do not establish a definitive private relationship arc, whether uncomplicated, troubled, or marked by estrangement. A responsible portrait keeps those limits in view rather than treating a quote, interview, or family photograph as the whole story.

For readers who want to explore Hedren’s perspective directly, Tippi: A Memoir, written with Lindsay Harrison and published by HarperCollins, is a relevant starting point. Griffith wrote its foreword; the book is Hedren’s memoir, not a book presented as exclusively about their relationship. HarperCollins catalog listing via Google Books
