Dakota Johnson’s January 27, 2024, Saturday Night Live monologue turned a photo from the show’s 2015 40th anniversary into a visual bait-and-switch: she seemed to point toward Donald Trump, then the camera revealed Taylor Swift as the person she called a future “most powerful person in America.” It was a comedic compliment, not a factual ranking.
How the Taylor Swift reveal worked
Johnson, hosting Saturday Night Live for the second time, recalled that her previous hosting appearance followed the program’s 40th anniversary. She brought up a photo from that 2015 event, which included Sarah Palin, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Donald Trump and Taylor Swift.
As Johnson directed attention to Trump, she said, “It’s just crazy to be standing so close to someone who would become the most powerful person in America.” The setup made Trump seem to be the subject. The camera then showed Swift, reframing the line as a joke about her future influence. What Johnson meant by “most powerful person in America”
The phrase belongs to the punchline. It is Johnson’s comedic description of Swift, delivered after the camera’s misdirect; it is not an objective assessment, a formal title or a measured ranking of political or cultural power.
