Yes, Tinder has tested a height preference—but it should not be described as a universal height filter. Tinder confirmed in May 2025 that it was running a global test allowing selected paid subscribers to indicate a preferred height for potential matches. The setting was designed to influence Discovery recommendations, not reliably exclude everyone outside the chosen range.
As of August 16, 2026, Tinder’s public help documentation does not confirm a permanent rollout for every user, country, device, or subscription plan.
What Tinder is actually testing
The reported feature is a height preference: a user tells Tinder what height they would prefer to see in potential matches. That is different from several features people may mean when they say “height filter.”

- Height preference: the height range a user would rather see in Discovery.
- Hard filter or dealbreaker: a setting that excludes profiles outside the selected range.
- Recommendation signal: information Tinder uses to rank or prioritize profiles without guaranteeing exclusion.
Tinder’s reported description places the experiment in the last category. Selecting a height preference may make profiles that fit it more prominent, but it does not necessarily stop other profiles from appearing. TechCrunch reported Tinder’s confirmation of the test.

Who can use the height preference?
The original reporting described the experiment as limited to selected paid subscribers. TechCrunch referred to Tinder Gold and Premium users, while other coverage described Gold and Platinum. Because those labels conflict, it is safer to say that access was limited to a test cohort of paid subscribers.
Match Group later described the feature in its second-quarter 2025 prepared remarks as part of a more flexible Preferences system, with height listed as a premium preference option. The SEC-filed version uses the same broad framing but does not establish a final subscription tier.
In practical terms, having Gold, Platinum, or another paid plan does not prove that an account has the setting. Tinder can enable or remove features server-side as part of an experiment.

How to check whether your account has it

- Open Settings.
- Scroll to Discovery.
If Tinder has enabled the experiment for your account, a height preference may appear there. Do not assume that the option’s absence means the app is malfunctioning: it may simply not be available for your account, market, platform, subscription cohort, or current app version.
Tinder’s official Discovery Settings documentation explains standard controls such as age and distance, but does not present height preference as a universal feature. It also warns that users can sometimes see profiles outside selected ranges, particularly when the available pool becomes limited.
Will it hide shorter or taller users?
Not reliably. Tinder reportedly said the height setting would inform recommendations rather than function as a hard filter. That means it could affect which profiles appear earlier or more often, but an out-of-range profile may still appear.
This distinction also matters for visibility. A height preference is not necessarily a rule controlling who can see or Like the person who selected it. Someone outside another user’s preferred range may still appear because:

- the preference is not a strict exclusion rule;
- Tinder has limited recommendations within the selected range;
- the other user changes or disables the preference;
- other recommendation signals take priority; or
- the profile’s stated height is inaccurate.
There is no evidence that the test guarantees a match with someone in the selected range, improves match numbers, or makes a person invisible in every direction.
How it fits Tinder’s matching system
Tinder says its recommendations can consider activity, proximity, age and gender preferences, profile information, interests, lifestyle descriptions, photo-related signals, and other anonymized signals. Its official explanation of its matching system does not identify height preference as a permanent part of the standard algorithm.
The experiment is therefore best understood as an additional preference signal under evaluation. It should not be confused with Tinder’s ordinary age and distance dealbreaker controls, which are documented separately.

There are two evidence-backed explanations. First, Match Group presented the broader Preferences system as a way to give users more control over recommendations. Second, placing height among premium preferences fits a strategy of using more granular personalization to distinguish paid plans from free accounts.
The test also arrived after Match Group reported a 5% year-over-year decline in paying users during the first quarter of 2025, from 14.9 million to 14.2 million across its dating apps, according to TechCrunch’s account of the earnings. That provides a monetization context, but it does not prove that Tinder introduced height preference specifically to reverse the decline or to attract a particular demographic.
The controversy around a paid height preference
Height is a physical characteristic that people generally cannot materially change, and dating apps already encourage quick, appearance-led decisions. A paid setting could turn a common personal preference into a more formal numerical signal built into the discovery process.
Some users may welcome that control because it can reduce unwanted conversations and make preferences explicit. Others may see it as reinforcing height stereotypes or giving false precision to a complicated question of attraction and compatibility. Neither response changes the feature’s technical limitation: a preference is not the same thing as verified information or guaranteed exclusion.
Tinder also does not appear to have introduced a new height-verification system alongside the test. Its 2019 “Height Verification” announcement was an April Fools’ joke, not a genuine verification program. It should not be used as evidence that Tinder now confirms users’ measurements.

Should you pay for Tinder Gold or Platinum to get it?
Do not subscribe solely for the experimental height preference. Tinder’s official subscription documentation lists broader benefits. Gold includes Plus features, See Who Likes You, Top Picks, and other benefits that can vary by plan and market. Platinum includes Gold and Plus features along with tools such as Priority Likes, where supported.
The height option may not be enabled even for an eligible paid account, may change as the test evolves, and may influence recommendations without excluding unwanted profiles. Tinder does not publish one universal price: cost and benefits can vary by country, platform, subscription duration, promotions, account, and testing status. Check the actual in-app offer before purchasing.
The most defensible decision rule is simple: subscribe only if the wider Gold or Platinum package is useful to you, and treat height preference as an uncertain extra rather than a guaranteed benefit.
If the feature is missing
- Update Tinder through your device’s app store.
- Check Profile → Settings → Discovery.
- Confirm whether your account has an active paid subscription.
- Consider whether the subscription and device are tied to a different market.
- Do not assume reinstalling the app will activate a server-side test.
- If the option was visible and then disappeared, contact Tinder support.
Tinder recommends updating or reinstalling the app for general Discovery problems, but those steps cannot guarantee access to an experiment. Its troubleshooting guidance is available under “I’m not seeing profiles in Discovery.”
The data-quality problem
A numerical preference is only as reliable as the height information in the profiles it uses. The available evidence does not show that Tinder verifies the height users enter. A preference can therefore create an appearance of precision even when the underlying data is self-reported or inaccurate.
What remains unconfirmed
- Whether Tinder has permanently rolled out the feature worldwide.
- Which final subscription tiers qualify.
- Whether access differs between iOS, Android, and Tinder Web.
- The final label, units, slider range, or interface design.
- Whether Tinder will retain, expand, modify, or remove the experiment.
- Whether the preference produces better outcomes for users.
Tinder described the 2025 initiative as a global test, but “global test” does not mean every account received it or that the feature became a permanent global product.
