Who does Nancy Travis play?
Travis plays Charlotte, described in the preview as a spirited widow. Allen plays Matt Parker, a widower who owns a classic-car restoration shop. The episode’s story begins with Matt visiting his late wife’s grave on Valentine’s Day, where an unexpected connection opens the door to Charlotte entering his life.
That makes the reunion a pairing of the actors in new roles—not a crossover or a return of their former characters. On Last Man Standing, Allen and Travis played Mike and Vanessa Baxter. On Shifting Gears, they are Matt and Charlotte.

Why was the casting called a Last Man Standing reunion?
Allen and Travis previously spent years as the married couple Mike and Vanessa on Last Man Standing. According to TVLine, the sitcom began in 2011, aired its first six seasons on ABC, moved to Fox for three more seasons after cancellation, and ended in 2021. Their new pairing on Allen’s later sitcom naturally prompted reunion coverage, even though the characters and series are separate.
How does the episode fit Shifting Gears?
Shifting Gears centers on Matt and his family as he runs his restoration shop. His estranged daughter Riley, played by Kat Dennings, and her children move into his house, setting up a family story alongside Matt’s work and life after loss. TVLine reproduced the show’s logline as: “When estranged daughter Riley (played by 2 Broke Girls’ Kat Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
