It was not a global launch: TechCrunch reported that the service would be retired on May 8, 2025, with users directed to Lemon8. TikTok’s later photo-sharing strategy emphasized Lemon8 and photo posts within TikTok, rather than presenting Notes as a broadly available current platform.
What was TikTok Notes?
Notes was TikTok’s experiment with a dedicated destination for still images and text. TikTok described it as a photo-content app; it was designed for image-led posts about topics such as daily life, travel, recipes, and personal thoughts rather than a feed primarily built around short-form video. TikTok’s stated rationale was to give creators more ways to express themselves and share photos.
It was separate from photo posts inside the main TikTok app. TikTok photo posts let people share multi-image content within their existing TikTok profile and feed; Notes was a separate app with its own profile and settings. It was also distinct from TikTok Stories and from Lemon8, another separate ByteDance-owned app.
Where and when was it tested?
TikTok said Notes had been tested in “select markets,” without publishing a complete country list in its November 2024 announcement. TechCrunch reported Canada and Australia among the early test markets in April 2024, and later identified Vietnam as another market. Those are reported examples, not a verified list of every country where the app was available. TechCrunch’s April 2024 report covered the early test, while TikTok’s November 2024 announcement confirmed that testing had taken place in select markets.

How did TikTok Notes work?
Linked TikTok login, separate settings
TikTok’s support documentation said users could sign in with an existing TikTok account or create an account through Notes. The username was shared, and blocked accounts and Family Pairing had cross-service implications. Other details—including following lists, nicknames, profile photos, account type, and comment settings—could be managed separately. Users could also choose whether to follow the same accounts they followed on TikTok. This meant Notes had some independent controls, but it was not an entirely separate identity from TikTok.
Photo posts and cross-posting
Users could post photos directly in Notes. TikTok’s support page also described conditions under which public TikTok photo posts and selected top comments could appear in Notes. A TikTok photo post shared there could display a link indicating that it was also available on Notes. This did not mean all TikTok content transferred: the documented sharing concerned photo posts, and audio from TikTok posts did not carry over because Notes focused on still images.

Separate analytics and content deletion
For TikTok photo posts shared to Notes, the support documentation described separate Notes analytics, including views, likes, and comments. It also described deletion behavior that depended on account and content status. Before logging in to Notes, deleting a TikTok public photo post or comment could remove the corresponding Notes content; behavior could differ after logging in. The page further warned that deleting a Notes profile through TikTok account management could delete the associated TikTok account. Anyone managing an old Notes account should read TikTok’s Notes support documentation carefully before taking account-deletion action.
What happened to TikTok Notes?
TechCrunch reported on April 1, 2025, that TikTok Notes would be retired on May 8, 2025, and that users were directed toward Lemon8. The report did not identify a specific public reason from TikTok. Product overlap or a strategic preference for Lemon8 may seem plausible, but neither should be presented as TikTok’s confirmed explanation. The retirement date and transition were reported by TechCrunch; TikTok’s November 2024 post separately documented its Lemon8 strategy.

The Notes website and support page may still be accessible, but a webpage or legacy help article does not establish that the consumer app is active, accepting new users, or available in a given country.

TikTok’s November 2024 announcement presented Lemon8 as a dedicated photo-content destination and described its account integration and creative tools. Lemon8 is not another name for Notes: they were separate apps with overlapping photo-oriented aims.

Can you download TikTok Notes now?
Availability is not established as a current, general offering. Check the official app store for your region rather than relying on an old launch article or an old app listing. If Notes does not appear, that is consistent with the retirement reported by TechCrunch. If a Notes webpage or support page opens, that alone does not prove the service is operational. Existing access, if any, would not establish that new users can join or that the app is supported worldwide. Avoid unofficial clones and APK downloads; verify the publisher before installing anything.

For an existing TikTok audience: TikTok photo posts
Use photo posts within TikTok if your priority is reaching people through your existing TikTok profile without managing a separate app. The trade-off is that this does not create the distinct photo-first identity Notes was meant to provide.

For lifestyle guides: Lemon8
Lemon8 is the closest alternative in TikTok’s own photo-sharing strategy. Its separate app and lifestyle-guide positioning may suit fashion, beauty, travel, recipes, and visual how-to content. It is not a neutral choice for people who want to avoid ByteDance-owned services.
For a photo-oriented social network: Instagram
Instagram is a natural option for users seeking a mature photo-sharing network, visual profiles, and direct messaging. Audience and feature availability vary by country and account type.
For searchable visual ideas: Pinterest
Pinterest is better suited to visual discovery, bookmarking, planning, and searchable inspiration than to a conversational personal feed.
For image-supported conversation: Threads
Threads supports image attachments, but it is more conversation-oriented than a photo-first feed. Choose it when discussion matters more than building a visual catalog.
Privacy and account cautions
- Review visibility: Notes shared a username with TikTok, while some profile and privacy settings were separate. Review public visibility, comment controls, discoverability, and account settings before posting.
- Consider account connections: TikTok’s support documentation described implications for blocked accounts and Family Pairing across the services.
- Be careful with deletion: The effect of deleting a TikTok photo post or comment could depend on whether the user had already logged in to Notes. Deleting a Notes profile through TikTok account management could also delete the associated TikTok account, according to TikTok’s support page.
Is TikTok Notes the same as TikTok Footnotes?
No. Notes was the photo-sharing app. TikTok Footnotes is a separate feature for adding context to video content.
