If Stremio will not open in Ubuntu, first identify how it was installed, then launch it from a terminal: the error usually points to a Flatpak/runtime problem, an old .deb dependency, a WebView failure, or graphics initialization. For current Stremio v5, Stremio documents Flatpak as its Linux distribution route; an old Debian package may need different treatment.
Start by identifying your installation and Ubuntu session
“Not opening” can mean the app exits immediately, shows a blank window, opens only from a terminal, or launches but fails when playback starts. These symptoms do not all have the same cause. Record your Ubuntu release, machine architecture, session type, and—if installed—Stremio’s Flatpak version:
lsb_release -ds

flatpak info com.stremio.StremioIf the last command says the application is not installed, that does not prove Stremio is absent: it may be an older .deb or another package. Stremio v5 became the stable Linux Flatpak release on June 26, 2026; the Stremio Linux shell project documents Flatpak installation for Debian-based systems, and Flathub lists the app as com.stremio.Stremio.
Launch from a terminal to see the actual failure
For Flatpak, run:
flatpak run com.stremio.StremioKeep the complete output. Pay particular attention to lines containing ERROR, FATAL, Failed, Unable, GL, EGL, WebView, or library. Stremio support recommends terminal launch when repairing a Linux package has not resolved startup, because it can expose missing libraries and other errors (Stremio support: Linux startup troubleshooting).

Repair a Flatpak installation before resetting its data
First make sure Flatpak and Flathub are available. If Flatpak is missing, install it and add Flathub if needed:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install flatpak
sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepoThen repair local Flatpak objects, update the app and runtimes, and reinstall Stremio only if necessary:
flatpak repair
flatpak update
flatpak install --reinstall flathub com.stremio.Stremio
flatpak run com.stremio.Stremioflatpak repair repairs Flatpak’s local installation data and objects; it is not a general Ubuntu package repair tool and will not by itself fix a Stremio WebView or GPU compatibility bug. If you use a system-wide Flatpak installation and repair reports a permission issue, consult Flatpak’s installation-specific guidance rather than applying broad permission changes.
Reset the Flatpak profile only if local data may be damaged
If Stremio previously worked and now exits or displays a damaged interface, a clean profile is a reasonable test—but it is not a guaranteed fix. Close Stremio, back up its data, then remove the app and its saved data and reinstall:

flatpak uninstall --delete-data com.stremio.Stremio
flatpak install flathub com.stremio.StremioThis removes local settings and cached data, so you may have to sign in again and reconfigure preferences. A reported Ubuntu 22.04/X11 WebView failure persisted after the user deleted application data, which is why resetting should follow—not replace—terminal diagnosis (Stremio issue 2634).
Repair or replace an old Debian package
If you installed Stremio from a .deb and Ubuntu reports broken dependencies, try the standard package repair:
sudo apt-get install -f
command -v stremio
stremioapt-get install -f attempts to correct broken package dependencies. It does not convert an old Stremio package into the current v5 Flatpak. If the package is obsolete or depends on libraries your Ubuntu release no longer provides, remove it and migrate rather than downloading old OpenSSL or libmpv packages from unofficial archives:
sudo apt remove stremio
sudo apt autoremoveThen install the current Flatpak using the steps above. Removing the old package is not the same as deleting Flatpak profile data; check which installation you are removing before proceeding.

Handle blank windows and WebView or GTK errors
If the window is blank or partly rendered and terminal output includes WebView communication errors or messages such as TypeError: undefined is not a function, the failure may be in the Linux shell’s WebView/GTK integration rather than a damaged profile. Record the Stremio version, Ubuntu release, and session type. Update Stremio and Flatpak runtimes, then—if your login screen offers both—try the other session type, X11 or Wayland. A session change is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
One current report describes a Stremio v5 Flatpak WebView failure on Ubuntu 22.04/X11, where the app partly starts but its internal WebView does not communicate with the backend (issue 2634). A matching error may be an upstream compatibility problem that local reinstalling cannot resolve.
Handle GL and EGL startup errors as graphics failures
Messages such as Unable to create a GL context, No EGL configuration available, or Disabled hardware acceleration because GTK failed to initialize GL point toward graphics initialization, not an ordinary missing-package error. Collect basic graphics information:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mesa-utils
glxinfo -BNote the GPU model, OpenGL renderer and Mesa version alongside the session type. If other GTK or hardware-accelerated apps also fail, that is useful context. A Stremio report documents startup failure on Ubuntu 24.04.4 with Intel HD Graphics Ironlake and OpenGL/EGL errors; that is evidence of a particular compatibility case, not proof that Ubuntu 24.04 or Intel graphics generally prevents Stremio from opening (issue 2667).

Do not install a driver at random solely because Stremio fails. Where a driver check is appropriate, Ubuntu provides:
ubuntu-drivers devices
ubuntu-drivers listAny driver change should match the Ubuntu release and GPU, especially on unsupported legacy hardware. In the reported Ironlake case, reinstalling, resetting data, repairing Flatpak, changing sessions, and disabling hardware acceleration did not resolve the failure; a local workaround may therefore not exist for every affected machine.

If flatpak run com.stremio.Stremio works but the desktop icon does not, Stremio itself can start and the problem may be stale launcher metadata or the desktop environment. Check Flatpak’s application listing and metadata:
flatpak list | grep -i stremio
flatpak info com.stremio.StremioAfter an install or update, log out and back in—or reboot—and search for Stremio again. A launcher-only failure has been reported for the Linux shell on Fedora/KDE, which demonstrates that the symptom can be separate from app startup but does not establish an Ubuntu-specific cause (Linux shell issue 102). Create a custom desktop file only if the standard Flatpak launcher is genuinely missing.

Roll back v5 temporarily or use Stremio Web
Official Flatpak rollback
If the current v5 build remains unusable and the failure matches a release-specific regression, Stremio’s June 26, 2026 announcement gives this rollback command:
sudo flatpak update
--commit=355c42ab40cc747bf964118d0795b36f62e8e1c7c10a2f4b71653992ce828db8
com.stremio.StremioThis pins the installation to a historical commit, not a permanent recommended version. An older build can lack current fixes; return to the current stable build once the issue is resolved. Follow Stremio’s announcement for the rollback context: Stremio Tech Update 81.
Web client fallback
Stremio Web can avoid some native GTK/WebView startup failures, but it is not identical to the desktop app. Local streaming functionality may require the separate Stremio Service Flatpak, which runs the Stremio server in the background. Browser playback, external-player integration, codecs, DRM, add-ons, and local-network permissions can behave differently or affect results.
Send a useful bug report if the failure remains
Include enough detail to distinguish a package, session, WebView, or graphics issue. Do not omit the terminal output:
