TikTok is currently available in the U.S. App Store and Google Play. The claim that it is not on the App Store describes the January–February 2025 interruption, when U.S. download and update availability was restricted. TikTok announced its return to both stores on February 14, 2025; the current listings remain available as of August 13, 2026.
TikTok is back in the U.S. App Store and Google Play: What happened and what users need to know
Short answer: TikTok is currently listed in the U.S. Apple App Store and Google Play. The premise that TikTok is not on the App Store describes a temporary interruption that began on January 19, 2025, and ended when TikTok announced its return to both stores on February 14, 2025. As of the research timestamp, August 13, 2026, U.S. iPhone, iPad, and Android users should be able to find the official app through their respective U.S. storefronts.
That does not mean the issue is permanently settled. TikTok’s availability remains tied to U.S. law, enforcement policy, app-store decisions, and the company’s evolving U.S. ownership and operating structure. The current store listings are the best way to check availability, the official app identity, compatibility, version history, and platform privacy disclosures.
Is TikTok currently available in the U.S.?
| Device | Current status | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | TikTok is listed in Apple’s U.S. App Store as a free app with in-app purchases. | Search for TikTok – Videos, Shop & LIVE and confirm that the result is the official listing shown by Apple. |
| Android phone or tablet | TikTok is listed in the U.S. Google Play store. The researched listing reports a July 2026 update. | Search for TikTok – Videos, Shop & LIVE and verify the developer and listing details before installing. |
A store listing does not guarantee that every user can install the app. A non-U.S. account storefront, an incompatible operating system, parental controls, or a school- or employer-managed device can all make an app appear unavailable. Those are different problems from TikTok being removed from the U.S. stores.

The removal was connected to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The law generally restricts U.S. companies from providing services that distribute, maintain, or update a covered application controlled by a foreign adversary, unless the application completes a legally qualified divestiture.
In practical terms, that threatened the services needed to distribute TikTok through an app store and deliver updates. It was not simply a question of whether an individual user could tap an already-installed app and open it. Apple’s January 2025 notice specifically said that TikTok and other ByteDance-related apps would no longer be available for download or updates in the U.S. App Store beginning January 19.
The U.S. government framed the law around national-security concerns, including the possibility that a foreign-adversary-controlled company could access sensitive information about Americans or influence the content people see. The Supreme Court’s opinion also discussed TikTok’s personalized For You feed and how user interactions are used to tailor recommendations.
The TikTok U.S. availability timeline
- January 17, 2025: The Supreme Court affirmed the lower-court judgment in TikTok Inc. v. Garland. The Court concluded that the challenged provisions did not violate the petitioners’ First Amendment rights. The ruling upheld the law against that constitutional challenge; it did not promise that TikTok would remain indefinitely available in U.S. app stores.
- January 18–19, 2025: TikTok warned that the service could be forced to go dark unless service providers received adequate assurances that the restrictions would not be enforced against them.
- January 19, 2025: The statutory restrictions took effect. Apple said TikTok and other ByteDance apps would no longer be available for U.S. download or updates through its App Store.
- January 20, 2025: The White House directed the Attorney General not to enforce the Act with respect to TikTok for 75 days. The directive also addressed the possibility of penalties for certain conduct during the relevant period. This was an enforcement delay, not a repeal of the law.
- February 14, 2025: TikTok announced that it was again available for download from both the U.S. App Store and Google Play.
- April 17, 2025: The Justice Department’s public-actions timeline recorded Executive Order 14258, which extended the enforcement delay to June 19, 2025.
- January 23, 2026: TikTok announced the creation of TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, described as a majority-American-owned joint venture with safeguards for U.S. user data, application and algorithm security, content moderation, and software assurances.
- July 16, 2026: The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel issued an opinion concerning whether the TikTok U.S. Data Security Joint Venture fell within the No TikTok on Government Devices Act. For that legal analysis, the opinion described the joint venture as independently functioning and majority-owned by American investors.
What the Supreme Court decision did—and did not—decide
It is easy to compress the 2025 dispute into the phrase TikTok ban, but that obscures the sequence of events. The Supreme Court upheld the challenged provisions against a First Amendment challenge. The decision did not order Apple or Google to keep TikTok available, and it did not create a permanent guarantee of app-store access.

What happened next depended partly on executive enforcement policy and partly on developments in TikTok’s U.S. business structure. The January 20 enforcement delay helped create the conditions for service and store availability to resume. TikTok’s later U.S. joint-venture announcement supplied a new corporate and security framework, but the company’s description of its safeguards should not be treated as an independent audit or proof that every future legal dispute has been resolved.
The July 2026 Office of Legal Counsel opinion was also focused on the government-device statute and the legal status of the joint venture for that analysis. It should not be read as a blanket declaration that TikTok can never again face restrictions affecting ordinary U.S. users.
What to do if TikTok does not appear for you
If you are in the United States and cannot find TikTok, work through these checks before assuming the app has been removed again.
- Confirm the storefront. Check that the device is using the U.S. Apple App Store or U.S. Google Play storefront. An Apple ID or Google account associated with another country may show a different catalog.
- Search for the complete app title. Use TikTok – Videos, Shop & LIVE. Before installing, compare the developer information, icon, description, and other listing details with the official result. Do not treat an unfamiliar website or APK mirror as an equivalent source.
- Check whether TikTok is already on the device. The app may be installed but hidden, offloaded, or removed from the home screen. Use the device’s installed-app or storage list to check. If it is present, the problem may concern sign-in, updates, or device restrictions rather than store availability.
- Review restrictions. Screen Time or parental controls on Apple devices, Family Link or similar controls on Android, and management policies on school- or employer-owned devices can block an app or prevent installation. The administrator may have to change the policy.
- Check compatibility. Compare the operating-system and device requirements shown on the current store listing with your device. Install available operating-system updates only if the device supports them and updating is appropriate for your situation.
- Try the official listing again later if the store is behaving inconsistently. Storefront caching, account errors, and temporary service problems can affect search results. If the official listing is visible but installation fails, follow the relevant Apple or Google account and device-support route rather than downloading an unofficial copy.
What not to rely on
A VPN, a foreign App Store or Google Play account, or sideloading an APK is not a guaranteed way to restore TikTok access. These methods can create security, account, licensing, feature, or legal complications, and they are not the same as official availability in the U.S. storefront. They may also leave you without the normal update and verification path provided by Apple or Google.

Does the return to the stores mean TikTok is completely safe?
No. App-store availability and security are separate questions.
The legal dispute involved concerns about foreign-adversary control, possible access to Americans’ sensitive data, and possible manipulation of content. TikTok’s recommendation system uses user interactions to personalize the For You feed, a feature discussed in the Supreme Court’s opinion. Those facts explain why the issue became a national-security and constitutional dispute rather than an ordinary app-store disagreement.
Apple and Google also display privacy or data-safety information on their TikTok listings. Treat those details as disclosures supplied by the developer or displayed by the platform—not as the result of a complete independent security audit. Apple expressly says that its privacy information is based on information indicated by the developer and has not been verified by Apple.
TikTok’s January 2026 announcement says that the U.S. joint venture will operate safeguards involving U.S. user data, application and algorithm security, content moderation, and software assurances. Those are company-described arrangements. The announcement does not, by itself, independently verify how the safeguards perform in practice or guarantee that future disputes over ownership, data, recommendations, or access are finished.

A sensible privacy checklist
- Read the privacy and data-safety sections of the current store listing before installing or updating.
- Review TikTok’s permissions in the operating system and disable access that is unnecessary for the features you use.
- Use a unique password and available account-security protections, and be cautious with links or messages requesting login information.
- For a child’s device, review the family-safety and content controls on both the device and the TikTok account.
- Recheck permissions after major app updates, because the app’s features and disclosures can change.
The accurate takeaway
The statement TikTok is not on the App Store needs a date. It was historically accurate for the U.S. download and update interruption that began January 19, 2025, but it is not the current practical answer. TikTok announced its return to the U.S. App Store and Google Play on February 14, 2025, and both stores list the app in the current research.
At the same time, users should avoid the opposite overstatement: TikTok has not been declared permanently immune from U.S. restrictions. The Supreme Court ruling, executive enforcement delays, the U.S. joint venture, and the later Justice Department opinion each addressed different parts of the dispute. Check the official U.S. listing for the latest availability, and treat corporate security promises and store privacy disclosures with appropriate care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did TikTok disappear from the U.S. App Store?
The original claim refers to the temporary U.S. store interruption that began on January 19, 2025. TikTok announced that it was available again from both the U.S. App Store and Google Play on February 14, 2025. As of August 13, 2026, both stores list the app in the researched results.

What should I do if TikTok does not appear in my U.S. app store?
First confirm that your device uses the U.S. storefront. Then search for TikTok – Videos, Shop & LIVE, verify the official listing and developer details, check whether the app is hidden or already installed, review Screen Time, Family Link, school, or employer restrictions, and compare your operating system with the current compatibility requirements.
Can a VPN or sideloaded APK guarantee access to TikTok?
No. A VPN, foreign-store account, or unofficial APK is not guaranteed to restore access and can create security, account, licensing, feature, or legal complications. Those methods are not equivalent to official availability through the U.S. App Store or Google Play.
Does the U.S. joint venture mean TikTok can never be restricted again?
No. TikTok’s January 2026 announcement described safeguards and a majority-American-owned U.S. joint venture, while a July 2026 DOJ legal opinion addressed the joint venture in the context of the No TikTok on Government Devices Act. Neither should be presented as a permanent guarantee that TikTok cannot face future restrictions or privacy disputes.

Availability has returned, but the legal, policy, ownership, and privacy questions around TikTok remain subject to change.
