The internet nickname describes a sexual scenario involving two people and a parked car: one person is outside or on top of the vehicle while the other remains inside, with the activity associated with an open sunroof or roof opening. The visual comparison is to a hamster drinking from a water bottle attached to a cage.

How did the meme spread?
Available reporting places its notable circulation on TikTok and other social platforms in early 2024. One explainer identified posts and creator commentary appearing around February 20, 2024, including a widely viewed video referring to acting like a “thirsty hamster” through a sunroof. The phrase continued to be recirculated in later trend coverage.
The format is particularly effective as internet bait. A creator can hint at an outrageous sexual act without showing explicit content, then let viewers generate questions, reaction videos, explanations, jokes, and debates about whether the idea is physically possible. Those follow-up videos can produce a large amount of visibility even when very few people have tried the behavior offline.
That is an important distinction: a view count, hashtag count, or number of reaction videos measures exposure and distribution—not completed sexual acts. The online attention may make the meme look like a new mass behavior when it may instead be a novelty discussion amplified by curiosity.

The most accurate conclusion is therefore that isolated attempts may have occurred, but viral visibility should not be interpreted as evidence of mass participation. Claims that “everyone” is trying it or that “millions” are doing it go beyond what the evidence supports.
Why the setup may be more stunt than sexual innovation
The physical arrangement creates obvious practical problems. Reporting on the trend describes the person inside the vehicle as needing to contort their body and neck, potentially making the position uncomfortable and difficult to maintain. That does not establish a meaningful pleasure benefit; for many people, the awkwardness may outweigh the novelty.
There are also risks unrelated to sexual pleasure. A person on or around a vehicle can fall, lose balance, collide with the car, become trapped by a moving mechanism, or damage the vehicle. A sunroof can also expose someone to branches, debris, or other objects. VICE reported that Tesla safety warnings specifically discourage putting body parts through a sunroof because of possible injury from flying debris or tree branches. That warning is vehicle-specific and should not be treated as proof that every sunroof has identical design limits—but it illustrates why a sunroof is not a harmless platform.

For the same reasons, this should not be treated as an activity to attempt in traffic, near pedestrians, in a public place, or in a moving vehicle. Public exposure and recording can also create privacy and legal problems that vary by jurisdiction.
What about STI risk?
The oral-sex component carries sexual-health considerations regardless of the setting. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, oral sex can transmit infections including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, HPV, and HIV. HIV transmission through oral sex is much less likely than through vaginal or anal sex, but “lower risk” does not mean no risk.
Condoms, dental dams, and other barrier methods can reduce the transmission risk associated with oral sex.
