The 2023 Guy Ritchie action-comedy was later reported as Prime Video’s No. 1 movie, reviving a title that earned only about $48.98 million worldwide in theaters. That makes it a chart hit and a newly discovered catalog favorite—not proof of a permanent, worldwide streaming blockbuster. In the United States, a June 24, 2026 availability check found it primarily offered to rent or buy rather than included free with a standard subscription.
What the Prime Video “hit” claim actually means
Tom’s Guide reported Operation Fortune as Prime Video’s latest No. 1 movie, with a syndicated version of the story making the same claim. That establishes a strong platform-chart moment. It does not disclose how many people watched, total hours, revenue, completion rates, or how long the film stayed at No. 1.

“Chart hit” is therefore more accurate than “global streaming smash.” The ranking may reflect a particular country, date, category and Prime Video methodology, and it should not be treated as an official Amazon audience record.
What Operation Fortune is about
Jason Statham plays Orson Fortune, a private super-spy recruited to stop the sale of a dangerous weapons technology. His team includes Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes and Bugzy Malone, while Josh Hartnett plays movie star Danny Francesco, whom the agents enlist for the undercover operation. Hugh Grant is billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds.
#1 Best Overall
Guy Ritchie directed and co-wrote the film. The official Lionsgate synopsis presents the setup as a globe-hopping mission that uses a celebrity asset. The result is best described as an action-comedy with spy-thriller ingredients, not a solemn espionage procedural.
Why it was underseen in theaters
A delayed, divided release
The release path was unusually complicated. Box Office Mojo lists an earliest release date of January 4, 2023, followed by the U.S. opening on March 3, 2023. Different territories used different distributors and release models; in the United Kingdom, the movie went to Prime Video rather than following the same theatrical route as the U.S.
Rank #2
Contemporary reporting in the Evening Standard connected the delay to concerns about Ukrainian villains during the Russia–Ukraine war. That was reported context, not a publicly confirmed studio explanation.
Modest theatrical numbers
It opened in the United States against major competition, including Creed III. Box Office Mojo records a $3,140,214 U.S. opening weekend, $6,496,125 from the U.S. and Canada, $42,487,181 internationally and $48,983,306 worldwide. Those figures support “underseen,” but they do not prove the film was unprofitable; gross receipts are not the same as distributor revenue or net profit.

Why it works for a second-life audience
The appeal
- Statham supplies an uncomplicated, physically confident lead performance.
- Ritchie brings brisk editing, stylish locations and dry criminal-underworld dialogue.
- Plaza’s sardonic energy and Grant’s comic villain give the ensemble recognizable personality.
- At roughly 114 minutes, it is an easy, low-commitment home viewing choice.
- The plot is accessible even if a viewer has not followed a spy franchise.
The limitations
- The weapons plot is conventional and often formulaic.
- The tone can lurch between broad comedy and international-threat stakes.
- It lacks the scale and elaborate set pieces of a major Mission: Impossible-style event.
- Viewers seeking intricate espionage puzzles or substantial emotional drama may find it lightweight.
Rotten Tomatoes lists a 51% critics score, indicating mixed critical reception. Warmer audience response in the site’s review coverage fits the film’s strongest use case: a breezy Statham-and-Ritchie caper rather than a neglected masterpiece.
Where to watch it in the United States
Subscription access is not permanent. A JustWatch U.S. check dated June 24, 2026 found no free streaming option and listed digital rentals from $3.99 and purchases from $4.99. Prices and offers can change by retailer, account and date.
Rank #4

Do not assume that a Prime Video page means inclusion with a standard U.S. Prime membership. The service can show subscription channels, rentals and purchases together, and international catalogs differ.

| More dialogue-led crime comedy | The Gentlemen | Stronger character and criminal-world emphasis. |

| A polished period spy comedy | The Man from U.N.C.L.E. | More controlled style and period flavor. |
| Another playful Ritchie ensemble | The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare | Comparable comic-action approach in a wartime setting. |
| A broader studio action-comedy | Red Notice | More overtly commercial and star-driven. |
| A direct Statham revenge vehicle | The Beekeeper | Less ensemble comedy and more focused vengeance. |
| Large-scale espionage spectacle | Mission: Impossible | Far bigger set pieces and plot complexity. |
Verdict: worth watching?
Watch it if you want a fast, low-commitment Statham/Ritchie adventure with dry jokes, attractive locations and a familiar cast. Skip it if you need an intricate spy thriller, franchise-scale spectacle or consistently serious tone.
Best Value
Its streaming resurgence is plausible because catalog placement, recommendation algorithms, Statham’s popularity and a simple two-hour viewing proposition can bring a recognizable film to viewers who missed its fragmented theatrical rollout. The evidence supports a real Prime Video chart win and renewed discovery; it does not establish a sustained global hit or disclose the size of the audience.
