The third was Payne’s companion, whose allegations and charges changed as the case moved through the courts. By February 2025, an appeals court had upheld the processing of the two alleged suppliers and dismissed negligent-homicide charges against three other defendants at that stage. A prosecutor’s update dated September 24, 2026, places the case in Argentina’s national criminal and correctional court system but gives no trial date or later ruling on the merits.
What happened, and what did prosecutors initially allege?
Payne died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Palermo, Buenos Aires. Argentina’s Public Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation began at about 17:10 after a 911 call. Its account of the autopsy reported multiple injuries and internal and external bleeding, alcohol at up to 2.7 grams per liter of blood, cocaine metabolites, and sertraline. Those findings do not establish that any particular substance caused the fall. The prosecutor’s appellate account.
On November 7, prosecutors announced charges against three people after lifting investigative secrecy. They accused one person who accompanied Payne of abandonment followed by death and drug supply or facilitation; the other two were accused of supplying drugs. In other words, the headline phrase “three people charged with supplying Liam Payne drugs” can be misleading if read to mean all three faced the same supply allegation. The initial prosecutor’s announcement.

Who were the alleged suppliers?
Ezequiel David Pereyra, hotel employee
Prosecutors alleged Pereyra supplied cocaine to Payne in exchange for payment on October 15 and October 16, 2024. The appeals prosecutor’s account says the court relied on hotel surveillance, travel records, and witness evidence in affirming his processing. Processing is a procedural decision, not a conviction. December and appeals accounts; Associated Press coverage, 2025.

Braian Paiz, waiter
Prosecutors alleged Paiz made two paid cocaine deliveries on October 14. The appeals account cites hotel footage, witness evidence, and messages in explaining why the court affirmed his processing. He, too, remained an alleged supplier rather than a person convicted in the accounts available here. December and appeals accounts; Associated Press coverage, 2025.
What happened to the other three defendants?
Payne’s companion, identified in official reports by the initials R.L.N., was initially accused by prosecutors of abandonment followed by death and drug facilitation. In December, the first-instance judge processed him for negligent homicide. The appeals court later dismissed that negligent-homicide charge at that stage, while the prosecutor’s February 2025 account said the distinct supply or facilitation allegation remained under investigation because the lower-court decision had not addressed it.
Rank #2
The hotel manager, G.A.M., and head receptionist, E.R.G., were also processed for negligent homicide in December. The appeals court dismissed those charges in February 2025. The dismissal described in that official account concerns negligent homicide; it should not be confused with a ruling on the companion’s separate drug allegation.
What evidence did investigators and the court cite?
In its November 2024 announcement, Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 reported that investigators had analyzed more than 800 hours of security footage, taken several dozen witness statements, and conducted nine raids. Those are measures of investigative activity, not proof of guilt by themselves. Prosecutor’s announcement.
Rank #3
In February 2025, the appeals prosecutor’s account said the court cited footage, travel records, witness statements, and messages when affirming the processing of the two alleged suppliers. That evidence was considered at a procedural stage; it was not a final determination of guilt. The same account relayed the appeals judges’ view that Payne was an adult with no restriction on his legal capacity and had not been forced or induced by others to consume the substances that left him in the condition hotel employees observed. That statement describes the court’s reasoning in the negligent-homicide appeal; it is not a general finding that no one supplied drugs.
