Three forms, three different views of marriage
Bhatt’s Scroll review, published July 15, 2018, brings together fiction, nonfiction and personal stories. The books are not interchangeable evidence: one follows a couple, one gathers multiple accounts, and one centers on a long-distance relationship. Their range is useful precisely because each asks different questions about what partners expect of marriage and of one another.

How expectations and ambition shape a couple
In Gardens of Love, a couple’s conflict unfolds across four landscapes: Lodi Gardens in Delhi, the Forum Romanum in Rome, Central Park in New York and Mumbai’s Hanging Gardens. The settings frame an intimate story about unmet expectations and the competing pursuits of two people. The review also links the couple’s present to childhood memories and family relationships, suggesting that a marriage is shaped by histories each partner brings into it.
The publisher describes the book as illustrated stories about “a marriage made and unmade, and made again.” Speaking Tiger lists it as a 176-page paperback, ISBN 9789387164604. Speaking Tiger’s book listing provides those publication details.

The review’s broader question is whether spouses with equally strong ambitions can make a marriage work. These books do not supply a universal formula; they make the tension visible through particular lives and stories.
What changes when distance tests the idea of support?
In The Story of a Long-Distance Marriage, Ira leaves Delhi for New York to study while Rohan remains in Delhi. He initially understands himself as supportive, but the separation tests his assumptions about equality and what their marriage means. Distance is not just a logistical obstacle in this account: it exposes how each partner understands support when one person’s ambitions alter the shape of their shared life.

Google Books identifies the 2018 HarperCollins India fiction edition and summarizes Ira’s move and Rohan’s life in Delhi. The novel’s focus remains this couple; it should not be treated as a finding about all long-distance relationships.
How the anthology broadens the frame
Knot for Keeps: Writing the Modern Marriage, edited by Sathya Saran, moves beyond a single couple. As Bhatt’s review describes it, the collection includes essays, fiction and personal experiences involving singleness, cross-continent marriage, illness, interfaith marriage and the Special Marriage Act, as well as queer relationships.

That range makes room for experiences that a single heterosexual love story cannot represent. Google Play Books describes the anthology as examining what brings couples together or drives them apart, and asks why marriage remains a socially accepted relationship goal as social norms and personal expectations change. Google Play Books’ listing describes the collection.
Bhatt’s review quotes psychiatrist Vijay Nagaswami’s observation in the anthology: “The ‘New Indian Marriage’ is acquiring a distinctive entity that is far more consciously experienced than it ever used to be.” That is Nagaswami’s view as quoted in the 2018 review, not a statistical conclusion established by the books.

What this selection reveals—and what it leaves out
Read together, the books invite questions about how family histories shape a couple’s present, whether partners can pursue different goals, and whose relationships are included when people talk about marriage. The anthology extends the frame to interfaith and queer relationships; the two novels explore specific couples and their conflicts.
The limits matter as much as the range. This is a three-book selection from a 2018 review, not a comprehensive or current map of Indian writing about marriage. Its literary examples can illuminate questions and possibilities, but they cannot establish how common any experience is or describe Indian marriages as a whole.
