Thomas Kingston, the British financier and husband of Lady Gabriella Windsor, died at the age of 45 on February 25, 2024. Buckingham Palace announced his death two days later, initially saying that he had been found at an address in Gloucestershire and that there were no suspicious circumstances. Thomas Henry Robin Kingston was a British financier who became publicly known through his marriage to Lady Gabriella Windsor, the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. The initial statement did not provide a cause of death. That changed after the inquest, which concluded on December 3, 2024. The Gloucestershire Senior Coroner’s official Prevention of Future Deaths report is the controlling source for the final finding.
What did the inquest conclude?
The coroner’s report records a narrative conclusion that Kingston took his own life. It identifies a traumatic wound to the head as the medical cause of death. The report also says that his intent remained unclear because he was experiencing adverse effects from recently prescribed medication.
Those points need to be kept separate:
- Medical cause of death: a traumatic wound to the head.
- Inquest conclusion: Kingston took his own life.
- Remaining uncertainty: the coroner said intent was unclear in the context of adverse medication effects.
This later finding explains why early reports and later coverage used different language. The February 2024 announcement was made before the investigation and inquest were complete. “No suspicious circumstances” was an early police or reporting assessment; it was not a final explanation of how Kingston died.
The report refers to a firearm, but detailed descriptions of the method are neither necessary for understanding the inquest nor appropriate in a general news or documentary article.

What medication issue did the coroner raise?
Reporting on the inquest said that Kingston had initially been prescribed sertraline and zopiclone after reporting sleep problems following work stress. He was later switched from sertraline to citalopram. Sertraline and citalopram are both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, commonly known as SSRIs; zopiclone is a separate prescription medicine used for sleep.
The Guardian’s account of the inquest reported that Lady Gabriella believed an adverse reaction was likely to have provoked the death. It also reported family evidence suggesting that Kingston had not previously shown suicidal intent. These were statements and interpretations presented during the inquest. They should not be rewritten as proof that one named medicine definitively caused his death.
The coroner’s Prevention of Future Deaths report raised two patient-safety questions:
- Whether patients receive adequate information about suicide risks associated with SSRI medication.
- Whether it is appropriate to advise a patient to continue taking an SSRI or switch to another SSRI when the first medicine has not helped or has produced adverse side effects.
The report was a warning about communication, prescribing guidance and patient safety arising from this individual inquest. It was not a finding that antidepressants generally cause suicide, and it did not establish that the medication alone mechanically caused Kingston’s death. Anyone taking prescribed medication should not stop or change it without speaking with a qualified medical professional.

When did Thomas Kingston marry Lady Gabriella Windsor?
Kingston married Lady Gabriella Windsor on May 18, 2019, at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. The wedding was attended by senior members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

Secondary profiles also described earlier positions as an equity analyst at Schroders and managing director of Voltan Capital Management. Other retrospective reports said that Kingston later worked in or around conflict mediation and hostage negotiations in Iraq.
The Iraq-related accounts should be treated as attributed biographical reporting rather than as a fully documented official biography. Published profiles included dramatic claims about his experiences in conflict zones, including accounts of surviving a suicide bombing and involvement in hostage negotiations. What happened to Devonport Capital after Kingston’s death?
Devonport Capital later entered administration on February 27, 2025, according to Companies House records. The filing history recorded an administrator’s progress report in September 2025 and a notice dated March 2, 2026 concerning the move from administration to creditors’ voluntary liquidation.
This is a separate corporate development. The available inquest finding does not establish that Devonport Capital’s financial difficulties caused or contributed to Kingston’s death. Any suggestion of a link between the company’s collapse and his death would be speculation unless supported by additional evidence from the inquest or another authoritative source.

What should not be inferred from the case?
- Kingston’s royal connection does not mean he was a senior working royal or held an official royal position.
- The phrase “no suspicious circumstances” in the first announcement was not the final cause-of-death finding.
