The message “This story is no longer available” can mean the Story was deleted, removed from a Highlight, or restricted from your account—or that Instagram is temporarily failing to load it. First check whether the problem affects one slide, one viewer, or Instagram more broadly. Refreshing or reinstalling the app can help with loading problems, but cannot restore a Story that is gone from Instagram.
What the message means
Instagram is telling you that it cannot deliver a particular Story to you right now. The message alone does not reveal why. An ordinary Story disappears after 24 hours unless its owner preserves it in a Highlight or Archive. The owner may also remove it from either place, edit the Highlight, or change who can see it.
Access can depend on the account’s privacy settings, whether either person has blocked the other, and whether the Story was shared with Close Friends. If only your account cannot view it, an access restriction is more plausible than a device fault. A blank screen or endless loading can point to a connection or app problem, but does not prove the Story still exists.

KQED/CNN reported Meta’s confirmation and the unrecoverable loss. That historical incident may explain some older missing archive material, but it does not establish the cause of a new error.

Diagnose the problem before changing settings
Try a few comparisons first. If you are looking at someone else’s Highlight, a second account or a friend can help establish whether the problem is specific to your access. If it is your own content, compare the Highlight with your Archive.
| What you find | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| One slide fails, but the rest of the Highlight works | That Story may have been deleted, removed, restricted, or become unavailable on Instagram. |
| Every Highlight on one profile fails | Profile access, privacy, or a profile-loading issue may be involved. |
| Stories fail across Instagram | Check the connection, app, login session, or whether Instagram is having a wider service problem. |
| The same Highlight works from another account | Your account may not have access; privacy or audience settings are possible explanations. |
| Nobody can view it | The Story may have been deleted, removed, or become unavailable platform-side. |
| It works on another phone or in the web interface | A local app, device, or login-session issue becomes more likely. |
These comparisons are clues, not official diagnoses. A Highlight circle can remain visible even when one of its slides is no longer accessible, and a DM or notification preview can outlast the Story it refers to.

Try these fixes as a viewer
- Reopen the Highlight. Back out to the profile, refresh it, and open the Highlight again. If a stale entry was being displayed, it may update; refreshing cannot bring back a deleted Story. MacMyths discusses stale Highlight entries and access changes.
- Check other Stories and Highlights. Open another account’s Story and another Highlight on the same profile. If just one slide fails, focus on that Story rather than repeatedly resetting the whole app.
- Switch networks. Try Wi-Fi instead of cellular, or the reverse. If Instagram’s web interface is available to you, compare it with the app. A successful connection test does not prove the missing Story remains online.
- Close and reopen Instagram. On iPhone, open the app switcher and swipe Instagram away; on Android, dismiss it from recent apps or use the phone’s Force stop control. Then launch it again.
- Update the app. Install an update offered by the device’s official app store. Updating may address a display bug, not deleted content. Guiding Tech lists updating among general troubleshooting steps.
- Sign out and back in, if needed. First confirm you know your password and can complete any two-factor authentication. Instagram’s account and sign-out controls vary by app build; look in the profile menu and current account or settings area rather than relying on a single universal path. Signing in again may refresh a session, but cannot change another person’s audience settings.
- Clear Instagram’s cache on Android. Usually, open the phone’s Settings, then Apps or App management, Instagram, Storage or Storage & cache, and choose Clear cache. Names vary by device. Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage or Clear data, which can remove local app data and sign you out. iPhone generally has no equivalent system-level cache button; offloading or reinstalling is a deeper reset.
- Reinstall only after safer checks. Make sure you can log in and complete verification first. Reinstallation may fix a damaged local app installation, but not an expired Story, a creator’s deletion, an audience restriction, or server-side loss. TechYorker also recommends treating app troubleshooting as a way to address loading issues.
If the Highlight works for other viewers but not you, ask the creator to check whether the Story’s audience includes you. A viewer cannot edit someone else’s Highlight or restore access to a Close Friends Story.

If the broken Highlight is yours
Look for the original in Archive
Open your profile’s Archive and look for the Story by its posting date. If it is there, try adding it to the Highlight again. If it is missing, check your phone’s Photos or Gallery and any cloud or computer backup. If Instagram shows the notice “Due to a technical issue, this story is no longer available. While we’ve since fixed this issue, your story can’t be restored,” that is a strong indication that the item was lost from Instagram rather than merely failing to load.

Remove the unavailable slide or rebuild the Highlight
- Open the Highlight and use its edit control.
- Remove the unavailable Story, then add surviving archived Stories again if needed.
- Save, return to your profile, and test the Highlight.
- If editing does not work, create a new Highlight from Stories that are still available and choose a cover.
Rebuilding can make the collection usable again; it does not recover missing source media.
Repost a local copy when available
If you still have the photo or video in Photos, Google Photos, iCloud Photos, a computer backup, or another app, you can post it as a new Story and add it to a Highlight. It will have a new timestamp; original views, replies, polls, stickers, and other interactive details will not return. Music, location stickers, links, and effects may need to be recreated, and rights or regional availability may differ.

Check account controls and report a suspected bug
Look in Instagram’s settings area for Account Status if content may have been removed or your account restricted. For a suspected technical fault, use Help → Report a problem, or the equivalent reporting control shown in your app. Include the exact error, username, Highlight name, approximate posting date, device and operating-system details, app version, screenshots or a recording, and whether one or many Stories are affected. A report is not a guarantee of restoration; Meta said Stories lost in the July 2024 incident could not be restored.
When you cannot recover the Story
If the owner deleted the Story or removed it from Archive, it is no longer available to viewers unless the owner has another copy. The same is true of content that Instagram permanently lost or removed. Cache clearing, logging back in, and reinstalling address the local app or session; they do not recreate server-side media. If the Story is someone else’s, the practical options are to retry later, check from another account, or ask the owner to confirm access or repost it.
Best Value
Do not give your Instagram password or session cookies to third-party “Story recovery” services. A deleted Story is not an ordinary file hidden in the app cache, and a service claiming it can retrieve permanently deleted server-side media should be treated skeptically.
Keep important Story originals backed up
For content you would not want to lose, treat Highlights and Instagram’s Archive as convenient access, not your only copy. Keep originals in your device library or a separate backup service, and periodically check that important Highlight slides still open. A backup helps only if it was made before the Instagram copy disappeared; it cannot retroactively retrieve media that was never saved elsewhere.
