The Von Erichs were central figures in Texas wrestling and World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), best known to many fans for their rivalry with the Fabulous Freebirds. Their story is also one of profound loss. The 2023 film The Iron Claw dramatizes that history but omits and changes parts of it, so it helps to distinguish the family’s documented wrestling record, personal recollections, and the film’s creative choices.
Who were the Von Erichs?
Family patriarch Fritz Von Erich was born Jack Adkisson. He wrestled and promoted, while his sons Kevin, David, Kerry, Mike, and Chris became associated with WCCW. Kevin’s sons Ross and Marshall later carried the family’s wrestling connection into another generation.
Their public identity was closely tied to the Dallas-area promotion, but the family’s reach extended beyond the ring. The University of North Texas records that Fritz wrestled there in 1973, Kevin and his brothers appeared at the school through the 1980s, and Ross and Marshall later wrestled there. Kevin began at what was then North Texas State University in 1975 and played football.
Why did the Von Erichs matter to WCCW?
WCCW’s history is not only a record of family tragedy. The promotion built its audience around personalities, rivalries, and major events, with the Von Erich–Fabulous Freebirds feud among its defining programs. WWE’s account of the territory, prepared with Kevin Von Erich’s help, follows the promotion through its rise, changes, and eventual merger.

A rivalry that helped define the territory
The feud with the Freebirds made the Von Erichs central characters in WCCW’s wrestling storytelling. Kevin later emphasized the importance of telling the promotion’s story with integrity, saying, “I feel like I had a responsibility to my father and brothers that the story of WCCW came out the way it really was.”
Major events and the promotion’s later years
After David’s death, the 1984 Parade of Champions tribute event saw Kerry defeat Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. In 1985, Fritz introduced Lance Von Erich as a distant “cousin”; WWE’s account says Lance was not actually related, and that the reveal damaged the family’s relationship with fans. WCCW later became World Class Wrestling Association after splitting from the NWA. In 1989 it merged with Jerry Jarrett’s CWA, forming the United States Wrestling Association.
How the family is remembered in wrestling
WWE describes Kevin’s barefoot persona and his signature Iron Claw, and identifies Kerry as “The Texas Tornado.” On April 5, 2009, WWE inducted Fritz, Kevin, David, Kerry, Mike, and Chris into its Hall of Fame as a family. That recognition honors their wrestling legacy; it does not erase the losses that shaped the family’s history.

What happened to the family—and how should the losses be understood?
The family experienced the death of Jack Jr. as a child, followed years later by the deaths of David, Mike, Chris, and Kerry. The University of North Texas reported in 2024 that Kevin had outlived all five of his brothers by age 36. The four later deaths occurred within a nine-year span; three of those four deaths were suicides. These are documented events, not evidence of a supernatural pattern or a single shared cause.

The word “curse” belongs to the dramatic and folkloric framing that has gathered around the family, not to an established explanation for their deaths. The Los Angeles Times reported that Kevin said he did not believe in a Von Erich curse. Treating the family’s story as a curse can turn grief into spectacle and obscure the people and circumstances involved.
Kevin has also spoken against letting loss eclipse the family’s life and work. In a WWE interview about the WCCW documentary, he said, “There were a whole lot of good moments not to be eclipsed by my brothers’ deaths.” That perspective is important: the family’s story includes a wrestling legacy, shared work, and personal relationships as well as tragedy.

How accurate is The Iron Claw?
The Iron Claw is a 2023 A24 dramatic feature about the Von Erich brothers in early-1980s wrestling. Its official description presents it as a true story, but that does not make the film a complete or scene-by-scene historical record. Kevin told the University of North Texas that it was not entirely historically accurate, while saying he appreciated its portrayal of the brothers’ love.
Chris is not shown as a separate character
The film excludes Chris as a distinct character. The Los Angeles Times reported that he appeared in earlier script drafts, but the filmmakers removed him and folded some elements of his story into Mike’s. Director Sean Durkin explained the choice this way: “It was one more tragedy that the film couldn’t really withstand.” Chris died in 1991, weeks before his 22nd birthday.
Other details are changed or simplified
The Los Angeles Times reports that the film changes the order in which Kevin and Pam’s children were born and simplifies the origin of the Von Erich name. Durkin drew on historical material but also acknowledged making “human guesses.” The movie should therefore be understood as a dramatic interpretation, not a substitute for the family timeline or WCCW’s record.

Three useful ways to separate the story’s layers
- Documented history: Promotion timelines and institutional accounts establish events such as WCCW’s major programs, the 1984 tribute event, and the 1989 merger.
- Personal recollections: Kevin’s comments and interviews offer a family member’s perspective, including how he wants the wrestling history remembered.
- Film choices: The Iron Claw compresses, omits, and reshapes details to tell a feature-length drama.
Kevin described the film’s imagined reunion scene as “a beautiful thought to me.” That response can coexist with his view that the film is not entirely accurate: emotional meaning and historical completeness are different measures.
Where can fans explore the story further?
Different formats serve different purposes, and none needs to stand in for every other account.
- WCCW archival footage and interviews: WWE’s library and documentary material offer wrestling broadcasts and participants’ recollections, including Kevin’s perspective on how the promotion should be represented.
- The Iron Claw: A dramatic feature that introduces the family’s story through film, with significant narrative omissions and changes.
- Fritz Von Erich: Master of the Iron Claw: Ron G. Mullinax’s biography, cited by the Los Angeles Times as background on the family.
