They Will Kill You is a bloody horror-action-comedy built around Zazie Beetz’s forceful physical performance and elaborate fights. The “Kill Bill” comparison fits its stylized revenge-action energy, but this is a critical shorthand, not an official connection or adaptation. The film’s cyclical structure and uneven blend of horror and comedy keep its impact from landing as consistently as its action.

What is They Will Kill You about?

Directed by Kirill Sokolov, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Litvak, the film follows a woman trying to survive a night at the Virgil, a demonic cult’s death-trap lair. The official site lists Beetz alongside Myha’la, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette. That contained survival premise gives the movie a setting for its bloody confrontations and darkly comic violence; it does not need a sprawling mythology to get its central fight underway.

Warner Bros. Horror’s official film site lists the cast and filmmakers. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing describes the premise and lists a 1h 34m runtime and an R rating.

Is the “Kill Bill” comparison fair?

As a description of style, yes. The Los Angeles Times’ Katie Walsh calls the movie a “cheerfully gonzo ‘Kill Bill’ riff,” pointing to its Tarantino-influenced kung fu sensibility, nonlinear storytelling, and revenge-quest momentum. That comparison helps set expectations for heightened action and kinetic staging; it should not be read as evidence that the film adapts or is officially connected to Kill Bill.

The comparison has limits, too. A familiar revenge-action shape does not guarantee the same narrative payoff, and the film’s own appeal rests more on its fight energy and Beetz’s performance than on reinventing the genre. Walsh highlights Beetz’s animated physicality and the fights’ momentum in her Los Angeles Times review.

What works: Beetz and the fight scenes

Beetz is the film’s clearest asset. The action gives her room to communicate through movement, and the Los Angeles Times praises both her physical performance and the kinetic construction of the fights. The result is a capable vehicle for a lead who can keep the mayhem lively even when the story circles familiar ground.

The appeal is not that every set piece changes the rules of action cinema. It is that the confrontations are staged with enough speed, exaggeration, and bloody comic flair to make the central survival struggle entertaining. If you are watching for a committed lead and stylized fight work, this is where the film delivers most reliably.

Where the movie loses momentum

The main reservation is repetition. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises the gothic setting and Beetz’s “infectiously fun” energy while warning that the cyclical structure can grow repetitive. When the story keeps returning to variations on survival and confrontation, the rhythm can begin to feel like a loop rather than an escalation.

The tonal blend is another point of division. The Associated Press finds the film a strong vehicle for Beetz but argues that it does not fully succeed as either horror or comedy. Its bloody mayhem has a satirical kinship with Ready or Not, but that comparison does not resolve whether the jokes, scares, and violence cohere into a satisfying whole. In the AP’s view, the final confrontation is a letdown: Mark Kennedy writes, “The devil himself seems smaller than you’d expect.”

These are related but distinct shortcomings: repetition affects the pace of the journey, while the ending and genre balance affect how satisfying that journey feels. They explain why the action can be enjoyable without making the entire movie equally effective. Read the Associated Press review alongside the Los Angeles Times’ more enthusiastic response for two different emphases, rather than a single unanimous verdict.

How bloody is it?

Very. In the United States, the film is rated R; the AP identifies strong bloody violence, gore, language, and brief sexual content and nudity among the reasons. In the United Kingdom, the BBFC lists the 2026 cinema version at 94m 25s and classifies it under Action, Comedy, and Horror. Its content advice flags strong bloody violence, gore, language, horror, sex, and nudity, with examples including stabbings, shootings, bladed weapons, decapitations, people set on fire, and prolonged fights. The BBFC also notes references to domestic abuse suffered by two children.

The UK classification is not a substitute for the U.S. rating: they are separate systems with their own labels and advice. Check the BBFC’s full content advice if specific material may affect whether you want to watch.

Release and streaming information

They Will Kill You opened wide theatrically in the United States on March 27, 2026. Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it would begin streaming exclusively on HBO Max on June 12, 2026; Rotten Tomatoes lists HBO Max streaming and Fandango rent-or-buy options. Those listings are not a guarantee of current availability in every country, so check the service in your territory. The AP gives the runtime as 94 minutes; the small difference from the Rotten Tomatoes listing of 1h 34m reflects how those sources state the film’s length, not a different edition.

See the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming announcement for the U.S. start date and Rotten Tomatoes’ listing for its current viewing options.

Verdict: should you watch it?

Watch They Will Kill You for Beetz’s physical commitment, elaborate bloody fights, and a gothic cult setting delivered with exaggerated action-comedy energy. Go in expecting a stylistic cousin to “Kill Bill,” not an adaptation, and be prepared for the film’s repeated confrontations and mixed horror-comedy tone to divide you. It is more convincing as a high-energy showcase for its lead than as a tightly escalating story with a fully satisfying finish.
