Liam Hemsworth plays Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher Season 4 onward, taking over from Henry Cavill, whose final season was Season 3. The series marks the change with a storybook-style retelling of earlier events—not an in-world explanation for Geralt looking different. As for why Cavill left, his specific personal reason has not been publicly established in the sources reviewed.
Who is the new Geralt in The Witcher Season 4?
Liam Hemsworth is the new Geralt. Netflix announced him for the role in 2022 and described him as taking over for the show’s final two seasons, Seasons 4 and 5. Cavill played the monster hunter through Season 3. Netflix’s Season 4 guide and its production announcement identify Hemsworth as Geralt.
Season 4 premiered on October 30, 2025. Netflix reported on December 10, 2025, that all eight episodes were streaming; see its release and status update.
Why did Henry Cavill leave The Witcher?
The exact personal reason Cavill left has not been established publicly in the sources reviewed. In his farewell announcement, he said he was laying down the medallion and swords and welcomed Hemsworth to the role, but did not give a reason. In 2022, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was reported by NME as saying that the parties would not get into the exact reasons for his departure. That is a secondary report, not a detailed explanation from Cavill.

Claims that Cavill left over creative disagreements, scheduling, Superman, or another specific cause should therefore be treated as unconfirmed rather than fact. The known change is the casting; the available statements do not settle his private motive.
How does the show explain the recast?
Season 4 opens by revisiting earlier events with Hemsworth playing Geralt in the retelling. The device is not a literal transformation within the story: Geralt has not changed actors in the world of the series. Instead, the show uses the shift in performer as part of a reflection on how stories are told and retold.
Hissrich said the opening explores how storytellers alter events and also reminds viewers what Geralt’s family looks like and what he is fighting for. GamesRadar+’s interview with Hissrich describes that creative purpose. The framing helps introduce Hemsworth’s version, but it does not answer why Cavill left.
What happens to Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri?
The main story continues after Season 3 leaves Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri separated. Netflix’s production synopsis says they must cross a war-ravaged Continent apart, find allies, and try to reunite. That ongoing plot—not an explanation of the casting change—is the season’s in-world setup. Netflix says Seasons 4 and 5 cover the remaining novels Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake; Season 5 is the series’ final chapter.

How did Liam Hemsworth prepare to play Geralt?
In a Netflix interview, Hemsworth said he was approached in late 2022 and was initially unsure about accepting. A conversation with Hissrich helped him feel supported. After taking the role, he moved to London about three months before filming and began physical training and sword work.
The 2023 writers’ strike paused production, giving him additional preparation time. Producer Tomasz Bagiński described Geralt’s physical performance as demanding fluid movement, speed, and sword skill. Hemsworth recalled that the first material he shot was the kikimora fight. Hissrich also described revisiting defining moments for Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer in flashbacks, replayed with Hemsworth so the cast could build their shared history and dynamic with him as Geralt.

What did Hemsworth want to bring to the role?
Hissrich said Hemsworth was candid about what resonated with him in earlier seasons and what he hoped to shift. Netflix’s official cast guide reports that Hemsworth wanted to bring a sense of humor back to the show. Hissrich said she believed he could make a good Geralt after their first meeting. These are the actor’s and showrunner’s descriptions of their approach, not evidence of how every viewer will respond.
