Ryan Reynolds came up with Henry Cavill for the Wolverine cameo on the first day of filming Deadpool & Wolverine. Director Shawn Levy said Reynolds named Cavill and sent him a text; the idea, message and reply came together in about 15 minutes. Cavill agreed, drawn by the chance to playfully cross his association with DC’s Superman into a Marvel film.
Why Reynolds thought of Cavill
The filmmakers were considering who might plausibly play Wolverine if Hugh Jackman were unavailable. Reynolds described the role as exceptionally difficult to recast because Jackman had made the character his own on screen. He suggested Cavill as someone who could take on the part in a distinct way.
In an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Reynolds said: “I can’t think of a more impossible and frustrating role to recast than Wolverine. I don’t know. As an actor, it would be awful and intimidating, and you’d need to take it in a different way. But if you had to do it, and replace the guy who’s made it canon in every way, shape, and form on-screen and off wasn’t available, Henry Cavill would be pretty good!” (Collider interview, August 5, 2024)
How the cameo was arranged
Levy recalled that the suggestion came on the first day of shooting. Reynolds proposed both the actor and the character in the same moment, then contacted Cavill by text. Levy said the idea, name, text and answer all came together in about 15 minutes.

Levy later told Variety that Cavill said yes right away because he understood the cameo could be “subversive and playful.” Levy described it as an affectionate nod to Cavill’s work and his legacy as a DC hero appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero. (Variety, August 6, 2024)
What the cameo is playing with
Cavill appears as a version of Wolverine, not as Superman. The joke depends on the contrast between his well-known association with DC’s hero and his brief appearance in a Marvel film. Time’s cameo guide identifies Cavill as playing a Wolverine variant. (Time, July 26, 2024)

Levy called the character “Cavillerine” in his Variety interview and said Reynolds coined the term. A separate ComicBook.com report spells it “Cavillrine,” so the nickname appears in more than one form in coverage. (ComicBook.com, August 6, 2024)
