The finale ends with a courtroom verdict, not a definitive explanation of motive. In the real case, a jury unanimously found Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra guilty of Asunta Basterra’s murder in 2015, and both received 18-year sentences. But the verdict did not establish why Asunta was killed, and the series’ competing reconstructions should not be treated as proven fact.
What happens at the end of The Asunta Case?
The six-episode series concludes with “The Trial,” where evidence and testimony are examined in court. The story’s central legal question—whether Asunta’s adoptive parents were responsible for her death—ends with a conviction. Its central question of motive remains open. Netflix’s episode listing identifies the sixth episode as “The Trial.”
The distinction matters: the finale does not provide a settled, fully proved account of why the crime happened. Explanations and reconstructions presented by characters are part of the series’ dramatic treatment of the case, not a definitive judicial finding. El Comercio’s ending explanation likewise describes motive as unresolved.
What did the real trial establish?
On October 30, 2015, a nine-person jury unanimously found Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra guilty. In its contemporaneous report, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE described the evidence considered by jurors, including the autopsy, an orange cord found at the Teo house and near Asunta’s body, Porto’s conduct involving a paper basket containing cord remnants, evidence of drugging, and witness testimony.

RTVE reported that jurors concluded Asunta had been given Orfidal during the last three months of her life and in a large amount on the day of the crime. Netflix’s Tudum account of the case says both parents were sentenced to 18 years. These findings support the conviction; they should not be expanded into a claim that the trial proved every scene-by-scene reconstruction or a clear motive.
What happened to Asunta, and what is dramatized?
Netflix Tudum reports that Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra adopted Asunta from China in 2001. Her parents reported her missing on September 21, 2013, and her body was found in Teo the following day. The account says she died by asphyxiation and a high dose of lorazepam.
