The Window on Death Row is a reported 38-minute documentary about Joaquin Jose Martinez, a Spaniard who was convicted of murder in Florida and later exonerated. The film follows Martinez reflecting on wrongful incarceration, loss and the second chance he received after release.
What is The Window on Death Row about?
An October 9, 2026 report by the Intermountain Catholic identifies The Window on Death Row as a 38-minute documentary centered on Martinez’s experience and reflections. The report does not identify the film’s director, producer, production company, premiere date or distribution options.
According to the newspaper, Martinez’s perspective on capital punishment changed during his incarceration. He witnessed its impact on families and came to know fellow prisoners as people. After his release, he advocated against the death penalty. The story also describes the death of his father, who was hit by a reckless driver, as part of the context for his reflections on punishment and loss.
Who is Joaquin Jose Martinez?
The Intermountain Catholic reports that Martinez was convicted in 1997, at age 23, after his former wife alleged he was involved in the murders of Douglas Lawson and Sherry McCoy-Ward, both 26, in Tampa, Florida. The newspaper says Martinez spent four years on death row and was exonerated in 2001, describing him as the first Spaniard exonerated from death row in the United States. It also reports that more than $1.5 million was spent to clear his name, without identifying who paid or providing a financial record. These details are attributed to the newspaper’s account; they are not independently established here through court records.

What does the film say about loss and punishment?
In a quotation reproduced by the newspaper, Martinez says: “It’s more than that, you know? It’s the lack of humanity, lack of compassion, the lack of love, the lack of forgiveness.” The report presents this as a line from the documentary; a full film transcript was not available.
The article also quotes Michelle Beasley, identified as a Blessed Sacrament parishioner and death-penalty abolition advocate, reflecting on Martinez’s father: “He realized that no amount of punishment of the driver would take away his loss,” followed by “Nothing can bring him back. … Nothing could close this.” The report says Beasley was quoting the film. Her broader call was: “As workers in the vineyard, we should shout this from the rooftops and visit those in prison.”
