Lisa Marie Presley remembered her father as loving and influential, and recalled meaningful time with him at Graceland. Their time together was limited: Elvis died when she was nine. Those memories are the clearest account of their bond, but they do not provide a complete record of his day-to-day parenting.
What was Lisa Marie Presley’s relationship with her father like?
By Lisa Marie’s account, she and Elvis shared an affectionate bond. In recordings described by the Associated Press and Graceland, she recalled feeling unconditional love, spending time with him at Graceland, playing with golf carts, and being together upstairs. These are her recollections of family life, not an independently observed account of every interaction.

Elvis and Priscilla separated when Lisa Marie was young. In a 2003 Rolling Stone interview, Lisa Marie recalled living with her mother in Los Angeles and regularly visiting Elvis, usually at Graceland. She also remembered that he would catch her singing and put her on a coffee table to perform for people. These details offer glimpses of their shared life, rather than a full custody or household history.
How did Elvis’s death shape the story of their relationship?
Elvis’s death was a defining event in Lisa Marie’s childhood and in her later memories of him. The Associated Press and Graceland have reported her recollection of running toward her father’s body and being pulled away. That account conveys the immediacy of the loss as she remembered it; it should not be stretched into a clinical claim about its lifelong effects.

Which accounts offer the clearest evidence?
Different sources establish different things. Official dates provide a reliable timeline; Lisa Marie’s interviews and recorded memories show how she described the relationship; later reporting and exhibit materials add context. None of these, on its own, reconstructs every private moment between father and daughter.
- Her recorded memories: The Associated Press reported on Lisa Marie’s recordings used in From Here to the Great Unknown. The book was completed by her daughter Riley Keough after Lisa Marie’s death. Graceland also describes those memories and their role in the book.
- Her 2003 interview: The Rolling Stone interview provides Lisa Marie’s recollections about visiting Elvis and singing for people. The copy available through an Elvis-focused secondary republisher is not the original Rolling Stone page.
- Graceland’s exhibit: Lisa Marie: Growing Up Presley presents childhood objects, photographs, home movies, and memories. It supplies family-history context, not an independent verification of every recollection.
For a fuller first-person account, From Here to the Great Unknown: A Memoir draws on Lisa Marie’s recordings and was completed by Keough. For an exhibit-based view of her childhood, Graceland’s Lisa Marie: Growing Up Presley brings together personal objects and visual material.
