Ford and DreamWorks announced a one-off design with a supercharged V8, while the Mustang later sold by Ford at auction was recorded as a 2013 fastback with a 5.0-liter V8 and six-speed manual. Those descriptions belong to separate records, so they should not be combined into one definitive specification.
Was the Need for Speed Mustang really a Shelby GT500?
No. Ford and DreamWorks described the film car as a custom Mustang, and Barrett-Jackson’s record for the Ford-sold movie car calls it a 2013 Mustang fastback inspired by the Shelby GT500—not a production Shelby GT500. Its appearance borrowed from the Shelby’s aggressive styling, but the auction record identifies the car as a custom Mustang.
Ford and DreamWorks announced their partnership for the film adaptation of Electronic Arts’ Need for Speed on June 10, 2013, introducing a one-of-a-kind Mustang designed for the movie. The announcement named March 14, 2014, as the planned release date. Ford and DreamWorks’ 2013 announcement is the source for the announced design; it is not an auction specification sheet.
What Mustang was used in Need for Speed?
The most specific public record for a Ford-sold film car is Barrett-Jackson’s archived listing for its Palm Beach 2014 auction. It describes the car as a 2013 Ford Mustang fastback with a 5.0-liter V8 and six-speed manual transmission. The listing calls its styling Shelby GT500-inspired.

That record differs from the 2013 announcement, which described the designed hero car as having a supercharged V8 but did not give a displacement or transmission. The two sources describe different records, and neither establishes that every Mustang used during production shared the same engine or configuration.
| Record | What it identifies | Stated mechanical details |
|---|---|---|
| Ford and DreamWorks announcement, June 10, 2013 | A one-of-a-kind Mustang designed for the film | Supercharged V8; displacement and transmission not stated in the announcement |
| Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach 2014 lot record | The Ford-sold movie car, listed as a 2013 Mustang fastback | 5.0-liter V8 and six-speed manual |
Ford’s March 3, 2014 announcement separately says Aaron Paul would drive the custom 2014 Mustang hero car and that the next-generation Mustang also appeared on screen. These details are further reason not to assume there was only one Mustang configuration in the production.

What was custom about the auctioned car?
Barrett-Jackson’s lot record describes extensive changes to the particular car it sold. The listed equipment and modifications include:
- A special wide body with extended rocker panels, custom fascia and rear valance, and a rear spoiler
- 22-inch three-piece billet wheels with Pirelli tires
- A twin-snorkel hood and low-profile mirrors
- Custom exhaust and coilover suspension, along with other revised suspension parts
- Recaro front seats, a rear-seat delete, and roll bars
These are the features recorded for the auctioned car, not a universal build sheet for every Mustang used in the film. The Barrett-Jackson lot record says the car was sold on a bill of sale only and could not be licensed for street use. It should not be described as a road-legal production vehicle.

Why do the model year and engine descriptions differ?
The records were published at different times and describe different things. The 2013 Ford and DreamWorks announcement presented the movie’s designed hero car and listed a supercharged V8. Barrett-Jackson later documented a Ford-sold movie car as a 2013 fastback with a 5.0-liter V8 and six-speed manual. Ford’s 2014 announcement, meanwhile, calls the hero car a custom 2014 Mustang and notes that a next-generation Mustang appeared on screen.
The available records do not provide a complete inventory of production vehicles or map each car to its scenes. The careful conclusion is that Need for Speed featured custom Mustangs, while the specific auctioned car’s recorded details should not be used to fill gaps in the announcement—or vice versa.

What Ford said about Mustang’s movie history
In its March 2014 announcement, Ford said Mustang had appeared in more than 3,200 film and television productions, citing MustangIMDB.com. That is Ford’s attributed figure from 2014, not a current independently verified total.
Stacey Snider, then a DreamWorks Studios partner and co-chair, explained the choice of car in the 2013 announcement: “’Need for Speed’ is rooted in Americana, and when we were casting our hero car for the film, Ford Mustang was the obvious choice.”
