The real story behind Supernatural’s 1967 Chevrolet Impala is a creative decision, not a secret history of a particular car. Creator Eric Kripke has recounted that he first considered a 1965 Mustang, then took his mechanic neighbor’s advice to choose the larger, more imposing Impala. In the series, that car became much more than transport: Kripke wanted it to function as a third lead, and the Winchesters’ miles on the road made it feel like home.
Why did Supernatural use a 1967 Impala?
The CW identifies the brothers’ vehicle as a ’67 Chevy Impala and describes Sam and Dean Winchester traveling the country’s back roads in it. The network’s series page gives the show’s debut date as September 13, 2005, and its production origin as Vancouver, British Columbia. The CW’s series page
The car’s origin story comes from Kripke’s later account of developing the show’s visual identity. According to TVLine’s report, he was considering a 1965 Mustang when he talked with a neighbor who was a mechanic. The neighbor argued that the Mustang was too mild for the intended tone and recommended an Impala: it was imposing, had room in the trunk, and could make people lock their doors at a traffic light. TVLine’s account
That anecdote is often reduced to “a mechanic chose the car,” but the point was not simply trunk capacity. Kripke was looking for a vehicle that could project character and atmosphere as soon as it appeared. The neighbor’s advice helped settle the choice; it does not establish a documented production log or the real-world history of a specific car.

How did the Impala become a character?
Kripke described the car’s intended role directly in a TV Insider oral history: “Having a car that was like the third lead of the show was really important to me.” Jensen Ackles, who played Dean, recalled that “From the pilot, it was clear the Impala was a vital part of the story.” TV Insider also describes the Impala as Sam and Dean’s only home for many years. TV Insider’s farewell oral history
The car’s importance follows naturally from the series’ structure. The brothers are constantly moving, and the Impala is the space they repeatedly return to between cases. It carries them through danger and gives their shared life a setting that is present even when they are far from any permanent home. Calling it a third lead captures that storytelling function: it is a recurring presence with a distinctive look, sound, and place in the brothers’ routines.

What does “Baby” mean in the show?
Fans and characters commonly call the Impala “Baby.” The nickname suits the affection Dean shows for the car, but its deeper significance comes from the history the show builds around it. The vehicle gathers traces of the brothers’ childhood and adult lives, turning an object into a container for family memory.
Season five’s “Swan Song” makes that accumulated history especially meaningful. The episode connects the Impala to the brothers’ bond, a reading also explored in academic analysis of the episode. That is the car’s fictional significance within the series—not proof of the provenance or condition of any surviving production vehicle. Academic analysis of “Swan Song”

Is the Impala’s story based on a real car?
The evidence supports a real creative-origin anecdote: Kripke has recounted considering a Mustang before choosing an Impala on his neighbor-mechanic’s recommendation. It does not establish that the Winchesters’ car was based on one privately owned vehicle with a hidden history, or document the present-day ownership of the cars used in production. The fictional family history and the show’s real-world vehicle choice are separate stories.

A fan-maintained Super-wiki page reports that Greenlight Collectibles made a 1:43-scale Supernatural Impala replica connected with a 2015 Loot Crate. That is evidence of a past collectible, not confirmation that it is currently available or that any present-day listing is official. A scale model is also distinct from a screen-used car.
