The finale reveals that Elliot was not simply Kosta’s accountant: he helped run the heroin operation and was responsible for brutal harm to its couriers. Helen’s final burrito text offers a reason to hope he might change, but it does not undo his past or confirm what happens next.
What happens in The Tourist Season 1 finale?
In Episode 6, Elliot and Luci’s fight with Kosta ends in an outback shootout. Kosta dies, and Luci is fatally wounded. Lachlan tries to blame Elliot and Helen for the deaths and other crimes, but evidence of Lachlan’s own actions undermines his account.

Afterward, Elliot meets Lena, who fills in the darkest part of his history. He had been more than Kosta’s accountant: he helped train women to carry heroin. Lena says two other women died when their drug packets burst. She survived after being cut open to recover the drugs, and says Elliot ordered it because he did not want the heroin lost.
Elliot tries to confess, but Lena does not pursue charges. Helen learns what he did and says she cannot forgive him. Elliot then takes pills with alcohol in an attempt to end his life. The finale does not show his death: it ends with him receiving Helen’s text, a burrito emoji.

Who was Elliot before he lost his memory?
Elliot’s recovered past makes clear that his amnesia did not turn an innocent man into a suspect. He was actively involved in Kosta’s criminal operation and, according to Lena, ordered an act that endangered her life to protect the drugs. The memory loss kept him from knowing what he had done; it did not erase the consequences for the people he harmed.
What does Helen’s burrito text mean?
The emoji refers to an earlier restaurant scene. When Elliot could not remember what food he liked, Helen encouraged him to try things and build a sense of who he was in the present. The text recalls that moment and signals a personal connection when he is at his lowest.

- The Tourist: Series 1&2
It is a gesture of hope, not a declaration that Helen has forgiven him. She has already said she cannot forgive what she learned, and the finale does not show whether her feelings change. As Lena puts it when she leaves, “You have to live with yourself.”
Does Elliot die at the end of The Tourist Season 1?
The episode shows Elliot attempting suicide with pills and alcohol, then receiving Helen’s message. It does not depict his death or confirm the outcome of the attempt. The final beat leaves his immediate survival and longer-term recovery unresolved.

Is Elliot redeemed by the ending?
No complete redemption is shown. The finale clarifies his criminal past and makes him face the harm he caused, while leaving open whether he can take responsibility and become different. Helen’s text suggests that connection and change may still be possible; it does not make his actions disappear.
What the finale resolves—and leaves open
- Resolved: Lena identifies Elliot’s role in Kosta’s heroin operation and tells him what happened to her and the other couriers.
- Resolved: Lachlan’s attempt to pin the crimes on Elliot and Helen is weakened by evidence of his own conduct.
- Open: The episode does not settle Elliot’s recovery, whether Helen will forgive him, or what kind of person he may become.
