The Tourist is the Jamie Dornan television mystery thriller—not the separate 2010 Johnny Depp–Angelina Jolie film. The series begins when an Irish man wakes in an Australian hospital after a vehicle chase with no memory of who he is. Across two released seasons and 12 episodes, he and local police officer Helen Chambers try to reconstruct his past while criminals connected to it hunt him.

Season 1 takes place mainly in the Australian outback; Season 2 moves the story to Ireland and the McDonnell-Cassidy family conflict. Both seasons are currently listed on Netflix in the United States, subject to catalog changes. No Season 3 has been authoritatively confirmed in the sources checked for this article.

What is The Tourist about?

The Tourist begins with an Irish man waking in an Australian hospital after a vehicle chase. He has survived the crash but cannot remember his name, his history, or why someone was trying to force him off the road. With only scattered clues available, he starts reconstructing his identity while people connected to his past search for him—and, in some cases, try to kill him.

The man initially goes by Elliot Stanley, played by Jamie Dornan. His most important ally is Helen Chambers, a local police officer played by Danielle Macdonald. Helen helps Elliot navigate the investigation, but their relationship gradually becomes more than a straightforward police-and-witness arrangement. Their growing trust gives the series an emotional counterweight to its criminal conspiracies and identity revelations.

The premise supplies the show’s main engine: every answer about Elliot also raises a question about the person he used to be. The series is not merely asking, “Who is this man?” It is also interested in whether someone can become morally different from the person revealed by his memories. That is an interpretation of the show’s central tension rather than a quoted statement from its creators, but it explains why the amnesia device remains important after the initial mystery takes shape.

A mystery thriller with black-comedy edges

The Tourist is best described as a mystery thriller with crime-drama and black-comedy elements. It is not a conventional police procedural in which each episode simply presents and solves a separate case. The Australian landscape, the shifting information about Elliot’s past, and the succession of people pursuing him create a more serialized cat-and-mouse story.

The tone can move from bleak violence and criminal danger to awkward, absurd, or unexpectedly funny exchanges. That contrast is part of the show’s identity. The setting also matters: Season 1 uses the isolation and scale of the Australian outback to make Elliot’s disorientation physical as well as psychological, while Season 2 replaces that landscape with a more personal conflict rooted in Irish family history.

Season-by-season guide

Season 1: the Australian outback

The first season follows Elliot as he searches for his name, his history, and the reason a criminal network is hunting him. His investigation unfolds through partial memories, contradictory accounts, and clues that do not always make him look like the innocent victim he might initially appear to be.

Helen Chambers becomes the person most willing to help him make sense of the evidence. Their partnership gives the season a second perspective: Elliot is trying to determine what happened to him, while Helen must decide how much she can trust a man whose identity and past are both uncertain. The principal figures around the investigation include Luci Miller, Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers, Billy Nixon, and Kosta Panigiris.

The first season premiered on BBC One in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2022. It was also distributed internationally through services including Stan and HBO Max, with availability varying by territory and time.

Season 2: Ireland and the Cassidy family conflict

Season 2 moves the story from Australia to Ireland. Elliot and Helen travel there seeking more definitive answers about his identity, but the journey brings them into the consequences of Elliot’s earlier actions. The story expands into a conflict involving the McDonnell and Cassidy families, including kidnapping and a serious threat to Helen.

This relocation changes the shape of the mystery. Season 1 is driven largely by an outsider trying to understand an unfamiliar place and an unknown past. Season 2 places Elliot closer to the people and history that helped shape him. It therefore works less as a completely new case than as an examination of what the first season’s revelations mean for Elliot and Helen.

The second season premiered in the United Kingdom in January 2024 and was shot in Ireland. Like the first season, it contains six episodes, bringing the released series total to 12.

Spoiler note: Elliot’s identity

The following paragraph contains a major identity reveal.

Season 2 identifies Elliot with the name Eugene Cassidy and connects his present circumstances to the Cassidy family and its feud with the McDonnells. That revelation is important because it reframes the central mystery: Elliot is not simply an amnesiac caught in someone else’s criminal story. His own history and decisions are part of the danger surrounding him and Helen.

The series uses that reveal to deepen its question about responsibility. Recovering a past does not automatically settle whether a person should be judged only by what he did before, by what he does after learning the truth, or by both. Viewers who want to preserve the identity mystery should stop before this section.

Cast and creative team

  • Jamie Dornan plays Elliot Stanley within the series’ present-day identity framework; the character’s deeper identity becomes central to the plot.
  • Danielle Macdonald plays Helen Chambers, the local police officer who becomes Elliot’s principal ally and later his partner.
  • Shalom Brune-Franklin plays Luci Miller in Season 1.
  • Damon Herriman plays Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers in Season 1.
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays Billy Nixon in Season 1.

The series was created and written by brothers Harry Williams and Jack Williams. It was produced by Two Brothers Pictures, a company associated with All3Media. Two Brothers Pictures has described the first series as the BBC and Stan’s most-watched new show of 2022 and identified January 2024 as the premiere period for the second series.

Is The Tourist a Netflix original?

Not in the strict production sense. The Tourist originated through BBC and Stan and was produced by Two Brothers Pictures. Netflix is a U.S. streaming home and distributor for the series, not the company that created or produced it.

Netflix’s U.S. listing currently presents both released seasons, and its public title page identifies the show as a TV-MA thriller featuring Jamie Dornan, Danielle Macdonald, and Shalom Brune-Franklin. Streaming catalogs are regional and can change, so this availability should be read specifically as a U.S. listing rather than a promise that the series is on Netflix everywhere.

Has The Tourist been renewed for Season 3?

The Tourist currently has two released seasons, and no Season 3 has been authoritatively confirmed in the sources checked for this article. The BBC Player listing presents two seasons and 12 episodes, while the current information from Two Brothers Pictures discusses the second series as the latest released installment.

That is not the same as saying the show has been definitively canceled. There is no verified renewal, production announcement, release date, or episode order to report at this point. Any article promising a confirmed Season 3 date would be going beyond the available evidence.

The Tourist movie: the separate 2010 film

The television series is often confused with The Tourist, a separate 2010 romantic action thriller directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. The film has no shared characters, continuity, or source material with the Jamie Dornan series.

Johnny Depp plays Frank Tupelo, a mild-mannered American traveling in Europe. Angelina Jolie plays Elise, the mysterious woman who draws him into an international pursuit involving the fugitive Alexander Pearce. Paul Bettany is also part of the leading cast. The story is centered in Venice and combines romance, intrigue, and danger.

The 2010 film is a PG-13 mystery/thriller, action, and romance title with a 103-minute theatrical runtime. Readers looking for a physical copy of that film—not the television series—can look for The Tourist (2010) Blu-ray. A clearly labeled film edition is important here because a title-only search can easily return the wrong work.

Is The Tourist worth watching?

The series is a good fit for viewers who enjoy serialized mysteries, unreliable or incomplete identity, morally complicated protagonists, and crime stories that are willing to be strange or funny. Its strongest distinguishing features are the amnesia premise, the Australian and Irish settings, the gradual identity revelations, and the relationship between Elliot and Helen.

It is less suitable for someone seeking a strictly realistic police investigation or a self-contained procedural. The story asks viewers to tolerate uncertainty and delayed explanations, and its shifts between grim danger and dark humor will not appeal to everyone. The best way to approach it is to start with the first season’s premise and avoid detailed summaries of Elliot’s identity before watching.

The best viewing order

  1. Watch Season 1, all six episodes, in release order.
  2. Continue with Season 2, also six episodes, after the first season’s identity and criminal-story revelations.
  3. Only choose the 2010 film if you specifically want the separate Depp–Jolie Venice thriller; it is not a prequel, sequel, or adaptation of the television series.
