The song had become part of Lindor’s walk-up routine—and a Mets-fan singalong—prompting the invitation for the group to perform. New York beat Los Angeles 12–6 that night, but the pregame music was its own memorable moment.
What The Temptations performed at Citi Field
On October 18, 2024, the group performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Mets hosted the Dodgers in NLCS Game 5. They then sang “My Girl,” their first No. 1 single, while Lindor warmed up in the outfield. According to the Associated Press account, the five singers put on Mets jerseys for the second song.
The appearance fit into a demanding tour schedule: MLB reported that the date was an off-day for the group, which flew in that morning and planned to leave the following day.
Why the group sang “My Girl” for Mets fans
Lindor made the song part of the ballpark routine
Lindor began using “My Girl” as his walk-up music in late May 2024. At Citi Field, fans often kept singing after the stadium track faded, turning the song into a shared moment around his at-bats.
The singalong led to the invitation
MLB reported that the group’s publicist contacted the Mets after seeing social-media footage of the crowd singing. The Temptations’ official history also says Lindor’s choice of the song led to the invitation.

Otis Williams, the group’s founding and last original member, described hearing about the crowd’s response while the band was on tour: “A few days ago we were told while we were out on the road, and I thought it was a heck of a compliment for whenever he starts to come out to the plate and the whole stadium starts singing, ‘My Girl,’” MLB reported.
A Motown hit becomes a Mets singalong
Released in 1964, “My Girl” was The Temptations’ first No. 1 single. MLB described the song as marking its 60th anniversary in its October 19, 2024 account. The AP reported at the time that it had passed one billion Spotify streams; that figure describes the report’s 2024 snapshot, not a current streaming total.

For Lindor, the crowd joining in was the point of a walk-up song. “It was really cool,” he told MLB. “It was an amazing moment.” He said players choose songs that match how they feel, but also want fans to connect with them; seeing the whole crowd get behind the song, with The Temptations there to sing it, made the moment special.

The Dodgers fan in Mets jerseys
There was a playful twist to the performance: when the AP asked Williams which team he supported, he answered, “Dodgers.” His allegiance did not change the occasion; the group had been invited because the Mets’ fans had embraced one of its best-known songs.

What happened in Game 5
The Mets defeated the Dodgers 12–6, sending the NLCS back to Los Angeles for Game 6. The result belongs to the game itself; the pregame performance was a celebration of the connection among Lindor, the crowd and the song, not a cause of the win. MLB’s account of the night covers both the performance and the result.
