The documentary most likely meant by “Documentary on ill-fated K2 expedition released” is The Summit, Nick Ryan’s film about the August 2008 K2 disaster. It was released in 2013 and combines documentary footage and survivor interviews with dramatized reenactments to revisit what happened near the mountain’s summit.
What is The Summit about?
The Summit examines the 2008 K2 disaster, when climbers converged near the summit and a series of events was followed by deaths and disappearances. Apple TV’s synopsis describes climbers who “had died or simply vanished,” while the British Council calls the film a documentary about the deadliest day in modern mountain climbing history. Those descriptions do not consistently separate people confirmed dead from people who disappeared, so they should not be read as a single, definitive death toll. Apple TV’s listing and the British Council UK Films Database provide those respective descriptions.
How does the film tell the story?
Nick Ryan directed and produced the film. It combines found documentary footage and interviews with survivors with dramatized reenactments. NewportFILM describes its nonlinear structure as revisiting events in an effort to examine what happened. The use of reconstructions is part of the film’s storytelling approach; it does not, by itself, resolve disputed details of the expedition. Titan2 Films’ page credits Ryan as director and producer, and NewportFILM’s listing describes the footage, interviews and structure.
When was The Summit released?
Use 2013 as the film’s release year: Apple TV lists it as a 2013 documentary, and NewportFILM records a screening on August 15, 2013. Titan2 Films identifies 2012 as the project year while describing the film as a 2013 production. The dates refer to different stages, not necessarily conflicting release records. See the Apple TV listing, Titan2 Films and NewportFILM.
