Daisuke Inoue is usually credited with creating the first widely recognized commercial karaoke machine, the 8JUKE, in Kobe, Japan, in 1971. It combined prerecorded instrumental music, a microphone, amplification and a coin-operated payment system for bars and clubs. But karaoke has no single uncontested inventor: Shigeichi Negishi built an earlier karaoke-style machine, the Sparko Box, in 1967, while Filipino inventor Roberto del Rosario later obtained karaoke-related patents in 1983 and 1986.

What “karaoke” means

Karaoke is commonly explained as a contraction of Japanese words meaning “empty orchestra.” The singer performs over an instrumental recording instead of singing with a live vocalist or band. The idea of singing with recorded accompaniment existed before karaoke machines; the invention was the practical combination of that music with microphones, amplification, controls and a business model.

The Japan Patent Office provides background on the term and the technology in its educational material on karaoke: Japan Patent Office karaoke material.

What existed before the first karaoke machine?

Karaoke grew out of technologies and habits that were already available in postwar Japan:

  • Instrumental or “minus-one” recordings made for singers.
  • Eight-track tape players and prerecorded music.
  • Microphones and small amplifiers.
  • Coin-operated jukeboxes and other pay-per-use entertainment.
  • Bars, clubs and company parties where customers were invited to sing.
  • Musicians who supplied accompaniment to amateur performers.

Taiyo Records was selling accompaniment tapes by about 1970, creating the software that made a dedicated singing machine useful. The All-Japan Karaoke Industrialist Association chronology records several competing eight-track and microphone-equipped systems during the same period. Karaoke was therefore a convergent invention: hardware, recordings and venue economics matured together.

Daisuke Inoue’s Kobe experiment

Daisuke Inoue was a musician and nightclub performer in Kobe. He accompanied customers who wanted to sing and learned what amateur singers and venue owners actually needed. WIPO describes him as assembling existing components—including a car stereo, coin box, amplifier and microphone-related equipment—rather than developing an entirely new electronic technology. Accounts of his career also emphasize that he learned songs by listening and repetition rather than reading conventional musical notation.

According to accounts later given by Inoue, the idea grew out of his work accompanying amateur singers and from an occasion when he supplied recorded backing music in place of a live performance. The exact circumstances vary among retellings, but the practical discovery was clear: people could sing successfully without a live band physically present. WIPO’s biography, “The Father of Karaoke,” records this account.

What the 8JUKE actually was

Developed in Kobe in 1971, the 8JUKE was an early purpose-built karaoke machine based on eight-track technology. It played recorded instrumental accompaniment, accepted microphone input, mixed the voice with the backing music and amplified the result for the room.

Feature Early 8JUKE arrangement
Music medium Eight-track tapes
Initial catalog About ten tapes containing approximately 40 songs
Vocal input Microphone mixed with the instrumental track
Payment and distribution Coin-operated use and rental to bars and clubs
Lyrics Printed lyric books, not an on-screen display

The Japanese government’s history of karaoke documents the 1971 date, the eight-track format, the early ten-tape catalog and the printed lyric books: From Japan to the world. The Japanese Records Association also identifies the 8JUKE with Inoue, Kobe and 1971: Japanese Records Association account.

Readers accustomed to modern karaoke should not imagine a screen filled with scrolling lyrics, digital song search or internet access. Television displays and timed lyrics arrived later as systems adopted laser discs, CDs, DVDs and other newer media. The first 8JUKE was fundamentally an audio machine supported by a songbook.

The business model that made karaoke matter

Inoue’s machines were rented to bars and clubs rather than primarily sold to individual consumers. A venue could charge roughly 100 yen for a five-minute performance in the early 1970s, according to the All-Japan Karaoke Industrialist Association’s historical testimony.

  • A bar no longer needed a musician for every customer performance.
  • Customers could choose to sing spontaneously from a familiar catalog.
  • The same machine could generate repeated per-song revenue.
  • A modest establishment could offer participatory entertainment without hiring a full band.

This rental model explains why Inoue’s contribution became influential even though the underlying components were ordinary. Karaoke was not simply a new player; it was a new service that converted singing into a repeatable venue transaction. The Japanese government’s account notes that the system could increase income while reducing staffing demands: government history.

Shigeichi Negishi’s earlier Sparko Box

Engineering and Technology History Wiki dates Shigeichi Negishi’s Sparko Box to 1967, before Inoue’s 8JUKE. It used prerecorded accompaniment and microphone mixing, making it a strong candidate for the earliest karaoke-style machine: ETHW chronology.

Negishi’s claim does not make Inoue irrelevant. The useful distinction is between an earlier machine and the model most closely associated with a scalable commercial karaoke business. NPR’s report on Negishi describes that distinction and notes that Inoue independently developed his own machine in 1971: NPR report carried by WBUR.

Other early machines and the role of software

The early industry included several near-simultaneous solutions. The All-Japan Karaoke Industrialist Association chronology lists the 8JUKE, Taiyo Records’ Harp system, other eight-track machines and early coin-operated, microphone-equipped jukeboxes: industry chronology.

These products show why the story cannot be reduced to one box. The technical invention was mixing a singer’s voice with recorded accompaniment; the content invention was producing usable backing tracks in suitable keys; and the business invention was renting the equipment and charging by the song.

Why karaoke spread quickly in Japan

Karaoke matched the social and commercial setting of Japanese nightlife. Familiar popular songs made participation easy, while bars and clubs could offer entertainment at low operating cost. Rental distribution lowered the financial barrier for venues, and after-work drinking and group dining supplied a steady audience. Later lyric screens and visual media made song selection easier and helped karaoke move beyond its original audio-only format.

Roberto del Rosario and the patent question

Roberto del Rosario, a Filipino inventor, is associated with karaoke-system patents obtained in 1983 and 1986. WIPO discusses those patents in its profile of Inoue: WIPO profile.

A patent date and an invention date answer different questions. Del Rosario’s patents establish a later patent claim for a karaoke system; they do not by themselves prove that he built the first machine in the 1960s or 1970s. Likewise, an earlier prototype is not automatically the first commercially influential product. Chronology depends on whether “first” means first prototype, first available machine, first coin-operated system, first rental service or first patented design.

Why Inoue did not capture a fortune from karaoke

Inoue did not obtain a foundational patent for the 8JUKE. WIPO quotes his view that he had combined existing components rather than created an entirely new technology. That meant he did not secure the enormous downstream licensing position a broad patent might have produced.

“Earned nothing” is also misleading: he participated in the early rental business and later worked in the karaoke industry. The more accurate conclusion is that he helped launch the business without owning a patent monopoly over the later global market. The Japanese Records Association documents his rental-based expansion and non-patenting history: Japanese Records Association.

How the first machine led to modern karaoke

The basic sequence was technological rather than instantaneous:

  1. Printed lyric books accompanied eight-track instrumental tapes.
  2. Television screens and timed lyrics made following a song easier.
  3. Laser discs, CDs and DVDs expanded the catalog and added video.
  4. Digital systems replaced physical media with searchable libraries.
  5. Streaming services and apps added key changes, tempo controls, playlists and offline synchronization.

Modern home systems therefore replace the original eight-track player and songbook with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, screens, apps and digital catalogs. They preserve the same central arrangement: a person sings into a microphone while prerecorded accompaniment fills the role of the absent orchestra.

So who invented the first karaoke machine?

Question Best-supported answer
Earliest prominent karaoke-style machine Shigeichi Negishi’s Sparko Box, dated 1967 by the ETHW chronology
Machine most associated with launching karaoke as a business Daisuke Inoue’s 8JUKE, developed in Kobe in 1971
Important early software Eight-track instrumental accompaniment tapes, including products associated with Taiyo Records around 1970
Inventor associated with later karaoke patents Roberto del Rosario, with patents obtained in 1983 and 1986

The most precise one-sentence answer is therefore: Negishi built an earlier karaoke-style machine, but Inoue’s 8JUKE is the machine most often credited with turning karaoke into a recognizable commercial business.

The larger lesson

The first karaoke machine was not a sophisticated entertainment computer. It was a practical assembly of an eight-track player, instrumental recordings, a microphone, an amplifier, a payment mechanism and a venue willing to rent it. Inoue’s lasting achievement was recognizing that these ordinary parts could let anyone become the performer—and that a bar could charge for the experience repeatedly.
