If it has been a while since you read the first four Stormlight Archive novels, these seven points will refresh the central conflict, the approaching deadline, and the plotlines left open before Wind and Truth, book five and the climax of the series’ first arc. This recap does not reveal events from the new book.
1. Roshar is shaped by its storms
Roshar is scoured every few days by gigantic, hurricane-like Highstorms, and its people and other life have adapted to survive them; humans and the humanoid Parshendi are at war. Macmillan’s book description offers that essential setting reset.
2. The Everstorm changed the conflict
The Parshendi summoned the destructive Everstorm, awakening the parshmen to the history of their enslavement by humans. That revelation makes the conflict more complicated than a straightforward war between humans and monsters: the people once treated as a threat have their own history of subjugation. Macmillan’s series synopsis summarizes the shift.
3. The Knights Radiant are back—and their ideals are tested
The Knights Radiant have returned, but their restoration has not settled what their power should be used for. New technological discoveries and the arms race described in the publisher’s Rhythm of War summary put their ideals under pressure. The Radiants are not one uniform group with one position; characters and orders face these questions in different ways.

4. Dalinar’s coalition is fighting a stalemate
Dalinar has formed a coalition of human nations to resist Odium. The Radiants, meanwhile, have fought a brutal war for a year without either side gaining an advantage, according to the publisher’s Rhythm of War summary. The coalition gives Dalinar a united front to work with, but it has not brought the war to a decisive end.
5. A contest of champions is ten days away
Dalinar challenged Odium to a contest of champions, with Roshar’s future at stake. The Radiants have ten days to prepare. But Taravangian’s ascension to Odium’s place has thrown the plan into uncertainty. These are the stakes and the setup going into Wind and Truth, not a prediction of the contest’s outcome. Macmillan’s synopsis lays out the immediate premise.

6. The main characters are pursuing separate fronts
The cast is spread across several consequential missions rather than gathering for a single battle. The publisher’s book description identifies these parallel fronts:
- Adolin in Azir: Adolin is in Azir as the wider conflict continues.
- Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains: They are at the Shattered Plains, pursuing a separate thread from the other groups.
- Jasnah in Thaylenah: Jasnah is positioned in Thaylenah.
- Kaladin and Szeth in Shinovar: Kaladin accompanies Szeth, who must confront the Unmade’s influence. Kaladin also helps Ishar.
7. The ancient history is still unresolved
Several investigations point toward questions about the past that remain open. Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain are looking into Ba-Ado-Mishram’s role in singer enslavement and why the ancient Knights Radiant killed their spren. Separately, Dalinar and Navani seek an advantage in the Spiritual Realm. These mysteries sit alongside the immediate military and political stakes; they are not yet answers the reader should assume going into the new book. Macmillan’s synopsis names these threads.

If you need a fuller refresher
Brandon Sanderson’s reading-order FAQ recommends reading books in a series sequentially. For a more detailed refresher, the 17th Shard’s July 22, 2024 Stormlight recap points to articles on the world and history, main characters, other notable characters, and outstanding mysteries, as well as chapter summaries, a podcast, and a Roshar map and timeline. That recap warns that it contains Stormlight spoilers, while saying it avoids spoilers for other Cosmere books. Check each linked resource’s spoiler scope before reading if you want to avoid material beyond Rhythm of War.
