Metamorpho is Rex Mason, played by Anthony Carrigan, and the armored fighter teased as Superman’s “mystery villain” was later identified by DC as Ultraman, the Hammer of Boravia. The December 2024 teaser left that opponent unnamed; DC’s post-release guide revealed the identity in July 2025. The trailer also shows Metamorpho in a cell with Superman, with what appears to be a Kryptonite hand.
What does the Superman trailer show?
The footage presents several distinct moments, and they should not be mistaken for one scene. In its December 2024 breakdown, DC described Superman facing an armored opponent in a stadium as a “mystery villain.” The same breakdown separately described a fight with a giant monster; it did not identify the monster as the armored fighter. DC’s teaser breakdown raised the question without resolving it.
DC’s May 2025 trailer analysis added another character clue: Metamorpho is waiting in a cell with Superman, and his hand appears to be made of Kryptonite. That visual suggests a connection to the mineral, but the trailer analysis does not explain the scene’s full context or establish the limits of his abilities. DC’s trailer breakdown identifies him as Metamorpho and notes the apparent Kryptonite hand.
Who is Metamorpho?
Rex Mason, played by Anthony Carrigan
Metamorpho is Rex Mason, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan in James Gunn’s 2025 film. The trailer places him in a cell alongside Superman and highlights his unusual hand. Those are the relevant on-screen clues; they do not, by themselves, explain why he is there or provide a complete account of his powers.

Who was the mystery villain?
Ultraman, the Hammer of Boravia
DC’s post-release guide identifies the armored opponent as Ultraman after the Hammer of Boravia retreats. That later explanation answers the question the December teaser left open: the teaser itself did not name him. Read DC’s July 2025 guide to the film for the retrospective identification.

Before the reveal, viewers and entertainment coverage speculated about possible identities, including Bizarro and Ultraman. Those were theories, not confirmation; WNDU’s May 2025 trailer coverage reflects that pre-release speculation.
Is the film’s Ultraman the same as the comics character?
Not in any straightforward sense. DC describes the comics’ Ultraman as an evil Superman from another Earth, but cautions that the film version is a substantial departure. The official explanation supports distinguishing the two versions, not assuming they share the same origin or backstory. The film’s Ultraman is identified in the story as the Hammer of Boravia.

Why the trailer breakdown can be confusing
- The armored stadium opponent: left unidentified in DC’s December 2024 teaser coverage and later revealed as Ultraman.
- The giant monster: a separate threat described in the teaser breakdown, not another name for the armored opponent.
- Metamorpho: shown with Superman in a cell in the May 2025 trailer analysis; his hand appears to be Kryptonite, but the image alone does not explain the plot or his full abilities.
Because Superman was released in July 2025, the “mystery villain” question is now answered by the film and DC’s later guide. The original teaser’s uncertainty is part of the release timeline, not an unresolved identity.
